Is it possible to run a joomla site over ssl or will it hammer the speed of the site. Just a query as i was wondering whether it would be possible to make a forum and user profile of a joomla site login really secure?

Yes, it is possible. Joomla! 1.0.13 can be hacked to work with SSL. Joomla 1.5 is, on the other hand, designed to work better with it. what version of Joomla are you hoping to use?

Just a link which refers to Joomla 1.0.13.

edit; The speed of the website will slow, but only slightly, from what i have experienced.

you can modify the Joomla code or, if you have control of the web server config, you could do it this way either.

SSL is slower than http of course, but as nevf said, it shouldn't be too bad depends on your hardware. I don't advise you running all the pages over ssl though.
