i'd say it might be wrong alright, again, i'm still treating it like an interview, you never know whose watching, so best to be as respectable as you can

I'm really not sure - hopefully somebody on here will be able to set the record straight for us...

Can anyone confirm what clothes are appropriate to wear to the medical please?

    Many thanks :)

Like I said, smart-casual, clean, respectable clothes. No need for a suit and tie at this stage.

i just wore tracksuit to medical, had to touch toes and stuff so something loose fitting would be fine

I’ll have a stab at anwsering some of your questions.

It’s actually the lower your merit pool number, the higher you scored in the assessement centre and better chance you have to be recruited.

The vetting runs alongside the medical, so it is indeed possible to pass the medical but fail vetting.

I guess the easiest way to know you’ve been vetted is to get the call offering you training! If you call the recruitment department they will tell you you’re vetting status and it’s worth noting that it was the apointments department that requested you don’t call them and not recruitment.

I took the suitable clothing for the medical to mean lose fitting top for easy access for chest sounds etc and nothing that would constrict mobility for the streches. Also consider you’ll have to strip down so apparal easy to take off/on will help. Personally I wore sport’s wear.

    Good luck guys.

    Martin.

    OfficerProblem

I had my medical last Monday and i just wore my normal everyday clothes which was fine, loose fitting top is best.

The medical didnt have any physical tests, this was my first time going for a medical and i was the same as u, a bit apprehensive about the process. So i will explain the whole medical from start to finish to give u an idea of what to expect:

On arrival u have to give a urine sample then go into a room with the nurse and she goes over a few forms with u. U then get ur height and weight taken and eyes and lungs tested. After that you are brought into another room then go into a sound booth to have your hearing tested.

You are then brought into the doctor who makes u do stretches (touch ur toes, stand on one leg with ur arms out and eyes closed etc) U then are asked to strip down to ur underwear and she takes ur blood pressure, listens to ur lungs, checks reflexes etc (just really a normal routine check up) and thats really it. It really isn't that bad.

And MartinC2006 is right, it is head of appointments who asked not to be contacted you can ring recruitment and they will give you ur merit number.

I hope that helps you a bit and good luck

It entails, running, crawling, climbing and descending stairs, balance beam, obstacle to get over whatever way you can, weave in and out of cones, weighted cone short run and return, dummy drag and return, and sprint to the start.

    Times 3.

I think you have to be under 3:43 these days to get in.

    Good luck!

    CooperCop

Yeah they shud be able to tell you wat stage ur vetting is at, i phoned last week and they told me that my vetting had just completed and that was why i was sent for my medical!!!! So i dnt know if that means u get sent for a medical if your vetting is completed, i sent mine off in the middle if October so it took appox 4 1/2 months for me to get vetted. Have you been sent for your medical yet???

To be honest i dnt think they would waste the time and money giving someone a medical if their vetting hadn't been completed, thats just my opinon though, i dnt think anyone really knows how they work it!!!!!!

    Mark,

I hope you don't mind me asking, however why have they asked you to do the test now??

Normally it is done at the end of the 6 months training.

Is it because of a prvious medical condition?

I do know that someone else on the forum was asked to do it becuse their BMI was slightly high.

Hey thanks for all the help guys - really appreciate it.

So if i ring recruitment they will tell me what number i am? Can they do this even if you have not had your medical yet although you have been given a date?

Can anybody confirm the number to ring? Presume you simply ask for the recruitment department?

    Many thanks:)

    No problem at all Mickey

Im having to do it because my BMI is slightly too high. i appealed because i considermyself fit seeing as i play rugby once a week and use the gym 4-5 times a week.

Hopefully i should be ok to get in after this test.

    hi,
went to registration night tonight, probably saw some of you there. it was god, quite interesting. made me 150% sure this was the career for me. we were pretty much told if you have any doubts, dont come back sunday week. really sunk in that im going to be a police officer and it feels excellent. new campaign starting on thursday. good luck to everyone. i was in the same position in june and it was my first time applying, but if you commit to doing it and arent half assed about it, you stand a good chance. anyway good luck again

    Just back myself,

Have to admit that that if they where trying to use scare tactics they worked a little on me.

The amount of effort required is sinking in but I’m still commited none the less!

I found myself looking about wondering who was who, I bet some of us are in the same class

    Hi all.

Had an gd read over this forum for a few days, so thought i'd finally post.

I'm currently sweating out the result of my medical, had an issue with the questionnaire which led to a delay.
Seems so close to the end now think i'm getting anxious.

one query is do you receive notification on passing the vetting?

also got the letter recently saying been put into a merit list but don't go phoning them up. So won't know what my number is to see where i stand.
Would anyone who got accepted be willing to indicate their feedback scores for comparison? (by pm)
    Apologies if this is intrusive

if you have had a medical and vetting and passd both then there is a very good chance you will be getting offered a place. Thats my view anyway since they only vet people who are going to be offered a position, according to these new guidelines to save money.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 199 ✭✭MartinC2006

    Hello & welcome Jonesville!

    All the answers are on this page however;

You can ring recruitment to ask for your merit pool placing, its appointment’s that said don’t call.

I don’t think you get word of vetting until you start (if you’re successful) however recruitment will let you know the status of your vetting if you call.

    Martin.

Hi all! I really really hope that somebody can advise me on this as it could potentially be make or break!

I moved to Northern Ireland from the mainland when i was 12 and on my medical questionnaire - where it asks the doctor if they have my entire medical history - he has noted that he only has my history from 1998 - is this going to cause a problem?????

I have absolutely nothing to note on the questionnaire from a medical point of view and the doctor has confirmed same with his responses - is 10 years of clear medical history enough?

I am currently awaiting a phonecall to advise me on this matter but if anyone has any idea please let me know - medical is next week and i am panicking

    Many thanks!

I think you will need to contact your old GP to get the notes sent over!

I would imagine on the day they will send you away with a letter requesting the info to be sent to your current GP.

They may only give you 4 weeks to do this, so I would get on the ball now just in case!!
