Any tips on books to read in order to pass the aptitude test?

I failed it once already, as did the girlfriend, but we are hoping to get through the second time.

    Regards
    Stephen

There are books on how to pass it, but they probably offer more help for assesment centre than inital test.

Keep reading things, newspaper articles etc and do the practice questions and get a grasp of how to actually answer the questions, some people find it difficult to decide if a statement is false or cannot tell.

Ahh hopefully i can help some of you guys out that are sitting initial selection test. The true false cant tell stuff...........Well there is a trick to it and also to get threw it quick. I went to a tutor with all my stuff and cant praise him enough ........Obviously the true false blah b lah stuff...........u don't really need to read the passage first......i went to the first question and read it..............if it said the car was doing 56 mph.....then id run to the passage and look for a number of mph...obviously if it says bla blha 56 then its true....but heres the thing.................if something isn't mentioned in the passage then 99.9 per cent of the time it's cant tell...........so if it says the car was blue.......and u cant find anything regarding a colour in the passage then it's cant tell...........whereas if it said the car was white........then obviously its false...The hard part is the mathey sota problem stuff.....u really just need to get into that w ay of thinking before u sit the test.i usually did the bus coaches (42 seats) infor repair blah blah blah all that stuff just b4 i sat exam......it got my mind thinking fast and problem solvey type of thing.
    Anways..bexst of luck all
    Alan

Matth1983, if you are human at all you will be aprehensive about starting, its a natuaral thing to be a bit nervous of the unknown.
Just keep reminding yourself that out of some 7 or 8 thousand people the assessors saw something in you to be there for training, hold your head up mate and take confidence from that, no matter what is thrown at you over the 20 weeks;)

good point, time is the most important factor. trust me it runs down very fast, and alot of people go too slow.

Read the questions and see what information its looking for, and then scan over until you find the part of the text relating to the question. However once you find the text you need, to read it carefully, and accurately.

    It might say;

In the last 50 years there has been a large increase in the amount of greenhouse gas in our atmosphere. current figures show we are using double the fuel as we used to, due to the increased cars on the road.

    Now you might get a statement such as;

"greenhouse gases in the atmosphere have doubled in the last 50 years."

It might seem like this is true if you dont read it carefully.

It really only says there has been a large increase, therefore this statement is false, but could easily look like its true.

    true, flase or cannot tell?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 96 ✭✭Ethan321

Actualy it would be "cant tell" as it doesnt state the exact figure, therefore it could be double or may not be. Double is still a large increase mate:)

Ok, maybe your right, but the point being made is to read the question, maybe i lost a few marks through saying things were false when they were actually cannot tells :D:D

    Hi peza999.

You will have 5 exams to do over the course of 2 days.

You join the new recruits from day 1 but you are treated very differently as a transferee.

All students can go home on Friday evening and must return for classes on Monday morning. Some come back on Sunday night, some leave it until Monday morning.

The food isn't too shabby, but best of all - it's free! You get a daily allowance of £10.60 which covers breakfast, lunch and tea. You also get a 70p allowance at morning break and another 70p allowance at afternoon break. It's done with cards and the ladies at the till simply swipe your card and debit it with whatever you are taking. You can go over your allowance but you'll have to pay extra.

    Hope this helps!

    hi psni,
just looking at the thread history and noticed this. could you answer a quick question which may seem stupid. is the daily allowance for all trainees or just transferees

TBH I really don't know if the transferees get it as well. The normal student officers get it every weekday until they pass out 21 weeks later.

Quick question for those successful in the March intake, has anyone received written confirmation regarding the induction night on Monday, I have quite a distance to travel and havent heard anything. Is anyone going to attend ?

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators, Help & Feedback Category Moderators Posts: 9,893 CMod ✭✭✭✭Shield

Attendance at SRN is highly highly highly recommended. It's when you get measured for your uniform and meet your trainers. Not showing up looks very bad.

    Hi everyone

Welll had my medical on Monday and got a letter this morning saying i passedicon10.gif so hopefully fingers crossed i'll get thorugh the 50/50. Has anyone else got their feedback back today from assessment centre, i got mine this morning overall i got 8/10 in three parts and 7/10 for the rest so i am quite pleased

About getting the medical....would i be right in saying that if you got a medical date this late then its likely that you will get into the training (provided you pass the medical and vetting of course). Since they prioritise on the merit pool now and all

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 107 ✭✭mickey2186

    Ricz,

I would imagine you are correct.

A medical at this stage is a pretty good indicator that you will be 'in' if you pass.

congrats to all those who are continuing to get feedback and dates for the medical.
after sending my university transcripts away to the administration in hope that they would allow me to defer i got word back today, they have offered me a place for May 25th,so im very pleased and in honesty very excited about taking my place in the training.

As to the registration night...god yes! Its a chance to meet the people you will train with, live with for a short while and to meet the people who will train you and to hopefuly get to ask some questions.
Is it worth the drive.....i would say yes
