    Hello people.

I am looking for a solution for how to measure ice thickness.

A pipe spirals up trough a tank close to 1000 litres. Is there a sensor to measure Ice on a pipe or would it be better to try another method ?

Ahhh you'd be looking for the aul Ice on a pipe sensor! :D

Just kidding, you'll need to provide more information on the application, the mechanics of it and how you'd imagine the sensing would work.

Once the general temperature of the tank falls to 0 (or so) ice forms around the pipe and expands outwards(1").The sensor will not have to be too accurate as the time delay will be relatively large.

Our aim is to to control the speed of the compressor via a plc and therefor the amount of refrigeration supplied to the cooling coil spiraling throughout the tank.

I have heard of a simple device for measuring the thickness of ice on the outside of pipes before however I have not come across a name or a product like this.

    Any ideas ?

Would a heat flux sensor work here ?
