Firstly why is it spelt GAR DA?

Scam if I ever saw it. You should be able to cancel the transaction through PayPal I think, if you were gullable enough to fall for it.

If you read the whole listing, you'll see that you're bidding on information about police auctions, not any actual merchandise.

I know Ebay is cheap but do you really expect to get a plasma tv for that price. Usual rules apply - if its "much" too good to be true then it is.

    Defo a scam.

    surely this false advertisement!

That describes a: 50" samsung plasma tv got from a garda auction, at as little as %10 the r.r.p

Thats not what your bidding on.

Just finished 4 x 12 hour night shifts. Sisters BF told me to get him one, his friend who is no EJIT, has bought one. Me like an idiot bought one, and only then, thought, hey, wait a minute.

You should be able to cancel the transaction through PayPal

Anyone know how to do this??

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,379 ✭✭✭Jimbo

Log into your account on their site PAYPAL.

I think you can cancel pending payments there

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,540 ✭✭✭joseph brand

My sisters BF owes me 60 quid.

    Payment is complete. Cannot cancel.

I would never fall for this on my own, only I took his word. He said 3 or 4 of his friends have bought one too!

Can this person be reported, their credit card must be attached to their Paypal account? Maybe what they are doing is ot illegal, due to fine print?

    Thanks for your help Jimbo78.

yes i'm sure you can get your money back. Title is grossly misleading no matter what the small print says.

they've bought them from this auction or past auctions??

How the hell could anyone fall for that?

Do you not have a look at a sellers feedback, especially if you're not 100% sure whether or not they're dodgy. All the positive feedback comments were generated by the same 2 users (tradeups2007 and 1221done) over the space of a couple of hours today, all 295 of them.

Report the seller, as has already been done and ring Paypal to find out if you have any comeback. The seller sure as hell wont refund you the money!

Has anyone ever been to an actual garda auction? I hear they have them in Store St station every so often but have never been. What exactly is it that they sell?

They have them all over, most of them goto an Auction House now and are held every now and again on a Tuesday.

Who actually believes that they could get a Plasma TV for €64, and that the delivery would only be a tenner? I mean, the price alone should have hit you in the face like a wet kipper, even in an inebriated state you couldn't fall for it.

It's well disguised though, just some tiny print saying that you agree that you are buying information on police auctions.

If you have fallen for this, then there's probably not much you can do other than chalk it down to experience and knowing that it's cost you €74 to never be scammed again. You could try a Paypal dispute, citing that it's a clever con. If that fails (likely) try the credit card directly.

Most of the Ebay Feedback ratings were given by the same buyer.

A surprisingly high amount of people!

What's even more surprising is that they don't read the auction completely... they see a picture and a low price so just bid blindly. Then by the time they realise whats up it is too late.

Claims by PayPal generally won't get you your money back. You can only claim on PayPal for tangible goods and these types of auctions are usually sent by emails so there is no come back. The only way you would have any comeback from PayPal is if the seller sent you something that was different than what he advertised - so if you did not read the auction properly it is not the sellers fault.

They are completely misleading auctions and are put out there to fool people but eBay do remove these all the time.

I'm reminded of the XBox box that sold for something like 200 pounds a number of years back. The buyer of that empty cardboard box complained to eBay, but got nowhere as it stated in the auction that you were buying an empty box. He just didn't read it and so wasn't due any kind of refund.

I'd imagine it'll be pretty similar here, it does state (although in very small writing) that you are buying information. It also doesn't say that you are buying a TV.

The only thing the many buyers here could have going for them is the questionable feedback by the seller. Using fake accounts to boost your own feedback rating is against the rules, so the buyers could complain about this, get the seller's auctions pulled, and therefore not have to go through with the buy. If they've already paid though, I'm not sure where it leaves them on a refund.
