    Iolar,

Exactly the same pay scale with the additon of the Northern Ireland allowance. This is around £2800 at the moment as far as I know.

Quite a lot of us starting in March it seems!

    Martin.

Martin, are you starting in march too? or have you defered to a later date?

As far as your partner is concerned martin i dont think she should panic yet, obviously the merit pool placing isnt going to be a problem for her and there is alot of the year left yet. Was emailing a friend of mine who was the CS in Ballymena at a time and is retired, he says that march is prob the second intake from campaign 13.
So i think she has a really good chance, patience just;)

    Ethan,

I was due to start in February but deferred until March so I guess I’ll see you lot in there :)

I believe this will be the 3rd intake of campaign 13 if you count the intake Jim’s on which was mostly comprised of 13 but some from others.

We are still hoping about my Fiancée and its good news about the placing but as of this morning she is pending vetting. If anything its good it’s taking a little longer as both of us on the same intake could be a nightmare!

    No problem Iolar.

    Martin.

Yeah i would nearly say she should be fine as its really only the vetting holding it up. Plus i think they try to mix squads up a bit with age etc.

Rem PSNI's post...rem to bring your sense of humour...most important lol:D

JIM, PSNI, anyone else who has done psni training

    can you advise me here.

im turning my training hardcore from monday for the 4 weeks before i start
on 16th march. i was wondering what exactly is required in training. how long are we required to run in how much time etc. just interested in the PE side of things for now. want to focus my training to reflect what will be required

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators, Help & Feedback Category Moderators Posts: 9,893 CMod ✭✭✭✭Shield

Don't go hardcore at all. They want to see improvement over the 20 weeks, and it a killer to improve on hardcore. Concentrate on short bursts of sprint work for 30 seconds each. Anaerobic training would be the best to help you prepare for the PCA in week 20.

Best thing for getting your fitness up for this is probably hill sprinting.

But i must warn you on this, dont do hill spinting anymore than once a week, it really takes it out of you. It is something that will help prepare though as hill sprinting is something they will have you do in PE at some stage;)

If you want any info on the best hill sprinting approach just gimme a shout

    justaquestion
p.s got oh letter today which said id passed and would be pension eligible which is great. everything has turned out great in the end. so happy. very long process though.

I check this thread far too much, it’s verging on obsession :D

Again I'm only making a guess but what I think may happen is this.

Any government employer I’ve worked for has paid 4 weekly or monthly. In either case they have a cut off for the pay period around 2 weeks before pay day. I’m pretty sure the PSNI is paid monthly so that’ll mean nothing at the end of March If I’m correct. What you may find is your current employer could have a similar policy and you may end up getting a full pay at the end of March from them. This will be the case for me so it’ll be an easy transition.

Not all employers work on this system though and the cut off period could be closer to the end of the month. My Partner’s employer works on the basis of
the last Thursday of every month being the cut off point. If the PSNI worked on this basis you'd get nearly 2 weeks pay at the end of March.

Hope the changeover doesn’t affect you too much.

    Martin.

As MartinC2006 said, for your first 4 weeks, you are allowed out at the end of the working day on Friday, and you can come back either on Sunday night or Monday morning.

You get paid on the last working day of the month, so you'll get 2 weeks pay at the end of March.

is that a certainty psni. just dont want to have half a pay packet to do me through april. sorry to be a pain

Nothing is certain, but it's the way it's been up until last month!

Well heres one to throw theories on their heads, i got a pack through today to say im getting a start on the march intake, for anyone out there who thinks they are maybe too far down the merit pool then think again, i was num 770 in the pool!!
And i havent had a phone call yet about it, thats not to say that they havent called while ive been out and about.

MartinC, think that should give your partner some hope as she is in a better placing in the pool.

    :):):):).

Well done mate! Can i ask when you done your medical? I am in the lower 500s in the pool and from a r/c background i called recruitment last week to see if i was getting a date for a medical( sent my vetting off in jan)and was told i was not high enough in the pool to get a date???

there is a dvd that was given out after the assesment centre that shows what its like and some clips of training etc

Jim, thats a strange one as you are better placing in pool than me. I done my medical back in november.

Either they have given me the wrong merit pool num, or i have misheard the num wrong, or they are just fobbing you off in meantime to they get all sorted, im not sure mate.
I know that the 2 times i rang recruitment it was 2 diff people i got with 2 diff attitudes, so its hard to know exactly what is happening til it actualy happens.
I know it was a bit of a shock for me to get the pack in the post fot course and registration details.

hi,just joined up,wish i had found this forum a long time ago.
well basically i've been accepted into the PSNI to become a police trainee.many problem with this though.
i'm only 20 years old and think that i may be too young to be giving up the remainder of my youth.i live in scotland currently and am a student currently in my third year of studies, meaning its degree year basically.
the psni want me to start on the 16 March,my exams finish mid-May.is there any possibility of deferring it until then?
im also from a roman catholic, nationalist background meaning many of my friends are nationalist/republican in attitude and i dont want to ruin my childhood friendships for the sake of a new job.
i personally have no problem with the police,i want to be part of a progressive upheaval of the justice system in the north of ireland for the benefit and equality of every citizen, but being from derry many people do.
i also have a long term girlfriend here in scotland and was wondering what the time off is like so i could travel over to scotland a good bit.
    thanks for your replies,
    regards greengloves.

    Hi greengloves.

Yes, you certainly are allowed to defer if you explain your circumstances to recruitment. Get the degree. It'll stand to you in later life.

When you join, you make a bunch of new friends who you will see a lot more than your regular friends. It's just the way it goes. Personally, I have lots of friends outside the job who know what I do and it doesn't bother them at all. If it does, then you would have to wonder how strong the friendship was to start with.

Time off for the first 30 or so weeks is only at the weekends. After that, it depends on where you get stationed and what shift patterns they use.

    Welcome greengloves.

I can understand your reservations, I have some of my own. I have some friends/family that I’m anxious to tell as I’m not sure how they’ll react and I’m sure many of us are in the same boat. In fact my closet family aren’t particularly happy about it but they’ll come round with time.
I would most certainly be finishing the degree if they’ll allow you to defer. My degree has proved as useful as a chocolate fireguard but at least I have it and the door is always open for further study.
You’ve done really well to get this far and all being well you can apply for a transfer back to Scotland after your probation. What do you have to lose? Give it a crack and if it’s not for you all you’ll have lost is the time you spent trying. You’re degree’s coming to an end anyway so it’s not as if you’re giving up a job.

Good luck with whatever you decide.

    Martin.

thanks very much for your support guys and i hope i'll see you all at garnerville in the near future.the police is such a good opportunity and the money is great,i feel it's a very logical step for me to take with the opportunity of advancement involved, and hell i can even do a new degree in police studies lol.
what about those cheeky buggers charging £120 for a bloody PE uniform.Although, i must say i am rather looking forward to both the physical and mental challenges involved.

there was quite a few women at my initial selection tests and also the assessment centres,is the intake proportional to male and female or do the best of the RCs and non-RCs get in?
i've basically made my mind up by now,im joining,im sick of being a skint student and don't want to think of the boring job prospects that await me otherwise, all i need now is to call the PSNI up and ask to delay my intake for a while.
Even if i could take two weeks off in the middle of training in May,it would be perfect.

It's highly unlikely that you will be allowed to do that. Defer. It's your best option.
