This thread is as pointless now as it was 2 years ago.

College is what you make of it, if you find it boring its more than likely becuase you're a boring person. Harsh...but true.

The only really valid point is that the bar is quite dead on some nights of the week. This does surprise me as when I was back in first year there were always far more people around on the average night, however as the years went by the Old Bar got quieter and quieter. That said there has been a change in the drinking culture here which may have something to do with it.

On the other hand the place is always packed for the €3 Tuesdays, theres a great atmosphere and always good craic on the dancefloor. Funny thing is, I never hear people complain about the place.

I think the bar being quiet has a lot to do with the drink offers in town. I mean Monday night you can go to Reds - €2 drinks, Wednesday xxi - €3 drinks, thursday barcode - €3 drinks. The bar's packed on Tuesday night, people follow the cheep beer

As atmospheres go DCU isn’t bad when compared to some of the other larger colleges like UCD etc.... what it does lack though definitely is a good college bar and events/nights out... The old bar (apparently closed down now for next year) is awful....always...only exception would be €3 Tuesdays when it gets a great crowd but you go for the cheap drink and the crowd, its still a terribly run poor excuse for a college bar. I know alot of people in the S.U. and they get some criticism for being a clique which I think is unfair, I’ve had to work with alot of them on behalf of the clubs I’m involved in and they are always very approachable, enthusiastic and always helpful..Any problems DCU as a whole have seem to stem from the college going out of their way to extract the max money from students on every possible occasion and alot of poor event organisation.

True enough and thats part of the changing drinking culture I mentioned, however in previous years people used to meet down in the Old Bar before going out on Wednesdays and Thursdays and even then it was good craic.

Also drinks are €3 which is only a euro and some change less than what it is normally, surely people aren't stingy enough to not drink in their bar for the sake of a few quid overall?

Also the point can be made invalid if you look at the NUIG bar. During the last two years I've been down there a few times and when in their college bar there was always a big crowd in there, be it 4:30 or 8:30 there was a great atmosphere in the place. Points to note: its more expensive than our bar, decorated in exactly the same fashion and also, is full of students, just like the ones we have in DCU. (feel free to lob in some kind of joke in response to that. ;) )

yeah one pint might be only 1.50 cheaper, but over the night that could be 15-20 quid extra to drink there, over four nights of drinking that's at least 60 euro. Not saying it's the only cause, but it's a factor.

I went to join the gym there the other day and man what a load of ****. The best part of the gym with the squat wracks and stuff ya can see through the windows while comin in through the back entrance are pretty much off limits to dcu students. The other part of the gym that we're allowed in contains nothing but some machine weights, no squat wracks, no bench presses and a handful of dumbells. When i asked a bout using the part of the gym with the good equiptment i was told thats for "elite athletes" only, ie.rugby players in the AIB league or eircom league players.Basically, no dcu students. DCU is such a bull**** college its unreal.Greedy shower of **** just out to make money,**** the students. No wonder they want 6 or 12 months payment up front, coz after the first time ya go there youll never go again. **** DCU

How is it being greedy, DCU don't make anything out of letting the elite athletes into that gym in fact they pay the majority of them to use it!!!!.

I was in DCU when that was the main gym and everyone used it and it was the same as the new one that you're complaining about now. It was good enough for everyone then, now its bigger and its not good enough for you! I'm sorry but if you need the sort of machinery that is in there than you should be a good enough athlete to avail of it.

I'm not an eircom league player, Im simply involved in the college football team and I have access so don't be complaining about it when clearly you don't know the facts.

That gym is widely claimed to be the finest elite setup in the country, hense the amount of elite athletes that use it. So stop expecting a free ride into it. Get involved in the college setup and you'll be able to get in!

    Here's the facts...

A gym was built in DCU. Generally when things are built on a campus, they are for the benefit for everyone.

In this case its not. It's for the DCU Publicity machine. 'Oh, such-and-such train in our gym, its just that good'... Thanks DCU, but what about the students?

People shouldn't have to join a football team to have full access to a gym, as they are paying already. You calling it a 'free ride' - its far from it, pal. People pay decent money, so they deserve the use of it.

It's yet another legitimate complaint by students that goes ignored by the hierarchy of DCU.

People obviously don't know the facts...... Oh, whats this?
DCU don't make anything out of letting the elite athletes into that gym in fact they pay the majority of them to use it!!!!

Hmmm... Dublin players train there because the Dublin County Board pay for it. DCU do make money from it. Just like everything they do.

DCU have to balance the books somehow guys.

But I do agree, its very frustrating that DCU appears to be more of a business than a University. I'm sure if they could say that it prepares the student for the real world, they would :D

So they balance the books by ripping off the very people who allow it to exist? Nice.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,660 ✭✭✭Gavin

The original DCU gym cost around 1 euro entrance. That was to use the weights /exercise equipment. The equipment wasn't great.

The new gym has a swimming pool, general purpose exercise room and plenty more. It costs 230 or so euro per student for 12 months. That is cheaper than the older gym with more facilities. I have no problem with paying in one go, it offers some quality of service.

Now, there are issues with it, such as the hordes of school children during the summer and some unfriendly staff, but by and large it is quite good. It's certainly not the ripoff yee are presenting it as.

What about the fact that all the best parts are out of bounds?

That in the evenings its impossible to get the machine you want unless you stand beside it and wait for the next guy to finish.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,660 ✭✭✭Gavin

If you ask for access to the 'elite gym', and can demonstrate that you know how to use the weights, they allow you access.

Maybe you should go to the gym when it's not jam packed.. What are they meant to do when it's full, kick people out so you can use it ? Surely if it's as crap as you say, there would be no one in it ?

DCU is the dullest place unless your one of the students who live on campus, they seem to enjoy themselves! oh and speaking of the gym, they weren't very generous to the swimming club with training hours.......at all! tutut!!

Sunnyjim, I said the majority get paid. Even when you take the case of the dublin team. Most of them are on paid scholarships within the university, so I stand by that. I forgot about bohs though, they pay afaik, so ill give you that someone pays! But they dont interfere with the studetns who are in there, i've trained with them a few times and you even have to wait in line in there too :)

You say things built on campus are generally for students, but the elite gym IS generally for students.. students who have a proven athletical ability. Like i said if you're a good enough athlete you WILL be given access simple. If your not then the other gym should be fine, just dont go at peak times if you have a problem waiting.

DCU is a university not a health spa. They provide you with all the educational stuff you need thats what you pay for. Not the elite gym!

i dont think dcu isnt dull at all.having the time of my life there and will be sad to finish this year-its all about what you make of it.some of the house parties in shanowen,on campus and in rented houses around the area have been nuts.i had over 40 people crammed into my livin room last yr after the summer exams.mayhem.and 3 euro tuesday in the old bar was class every week.only arrived for the last hour and was already twisted but still really enjoyed it.anyone remember when they played chelsea dagger in the old bar last year? how could anyone call that dull? they could try all they wanted but there was no way of gettin us off that stage! maybe im in the minority that enjoy dcu but thats my opinion anyway.

Not true in my experience, one of my mates lifts a lot of weights and was rehabbing from an injury and needed to use a machine in it to aid recovery and was denied access. He's an Irish international but because he's not in a mainstream sport they said no.

(eh... What's the gym got to do with anything? Anyway...)

The last 3 years in DCU have been great craic! Especially Tuesdays in the Old Bar. Such a shame that place is gone. I miss it. I'm not in DCU anymore, I'd love to know what Tuesdays are like in the new bar. Any good? Still fun? I was never keen on the new bar, so I'm curious as to whether it's good there now.

I have made some disparaging comments about Rag Week music acts on another post (some grumpy folks around here I tells ya!) but in fairness to the Union and Events, they do their best and usually do a pretty good job.

ha the "elite gym" ha i hav access into it 4 trainin. Wen i was shown it i was expectin all high tech equipment u kno top of d line...........all there was was footballers and weights i was like ah right nothin too special. I dont use it that often its mainly for muscle building nd tone

Sunnyjim why do u hate DCU? hav a bit of college pride. Just except that the elite gym is for competitive atheletes. DCU is renound for producing high performance atheletes. All in all if u were askd wat DCU is famous for its sport and education.

I really think im livin in a different college than what these other ppl are describin. It isnt Dull in d slightest. Mad craic.Personally i love DCU and wouldnt wanna go anywhere else. In my experience friendly ppl, down to earth and yeh ive kept close to my school friends but ive made so many other friends though socs nd clubs nd d general socialisin. So wats d point in complainin lads its reality so deal with it nd stop bitchin:)

Did he apply for a scholarship?? I know they only offer them to 'mainstream' sports (which includes tennis :p the sport ireland produces so many champions in :D).

Anyway If he is still rehabbing he should simply go up and knock on the door! Not being smart but someone will just open the door. Many a time i've not had a card and i just knock. Might get lucky and get a dublin player to open it for you :P make them work for their money :D

I have to add my disbelief at thinking DCU is dull. Yeah, the facilities can be annoying, theres nowhere to get dinner on campus for example and it's dead at weekends. But I always found the place to be full of life at other times, it's a small place so you're always bumping into people you know, the people who live on campus' living rooms get turned into unofficial common rooms and as for the balls...

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 6,525 Mod ✭✭✭✭dregin

Nowhere to get dinner???? I suppose it depends on what time you want your dinner at, but the nubar and canteen both offer fairly decent food.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,405 ✭✭✭gizmo

Aye, as dregin said there's feck all time you can't get a dinner on campus. Unless of course you want it after 8pm, but then again, that's not dinner time. :)

Oh and I think you'll find that most campuses around the country are dead at the weekend.

Yeah I think that DCU is a ridiculous rip off towards students, the fact that all the canteens are privately owned, and by the same company is absolutely ridiculous, no competition = higher prices for us, because they can bloody well charge what they like.

Since I started in DCU 3 years ago, the nightlife there has steadily gone downhill, and in a very bad way, in first year there were good parties to go to, with good people there, there was always something happening in the Old Bar. This year, the place is a complete joke, sure as Ive said before, the service is crap, absolutely woeful, again run by the same privately owned company.

The gym, while its better than the one I use, its still pretty bad, the equipment is getting old and worn, there isnt enough room in the free weights section, there arent enough benches, and there are none that decline properly, if you want to work free weights in with your machines, you have to trapze back and forth between two rooms, people dont seem to like working in with people, and they dont seem to like putting their weights back.

The fact that you cant use the elite gym is ridiculous, Im on the Cycling Club committee, and I was enquiring about use for the club members, we have some top notch cyclists including the Leinster Champ, and theyd give us nothing, the said we werent entitled to any time in the normal gym, never mind the elite one, even when it says in the college handbook, that all members of clubs are entitled to time in the gym, and Id assume that the clubs that are competing in the colleges name would definately get time!!! wtf! They said we could use one of the halls, but theyre hardly gonna let us do laps of the basketball court.

The college is very very money orientated in my opinion.

As a last note, yer man who works in spar - which btw is more expensive than the one up the road - anyway yer man, you know who im talking about, is the most arrogant ignorant pr1ck I have ever come across. EVER.

    /rant

    oh wait, nevermind.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,405 ✭✭✭gizmo

You also left out the fact that said company is actually owned by DCU which males it even more annoying.

Anyway, the sad fact is things will never change. Even when the campaign was going strong last year and hadn't gone off the rails there was still huge amounts of apathy towards it. You had people who didn't care about the prices as well as people who actually think they're not being ripped off and for any kind of change to occur both sets of people would need to rethink their position.
