Does anyone know how Ubuntu makes money? Neither the wikipedia page not the site itself make it obvious.

Since they're based off a "free source code" model, their costs are really only web hosting and commercial-grade support. Online distribution is handled by partners like universities, or torrents.

I think its bankrolled by some rich guy aswell.

Edit: Had a google and found this thread on ubuntu forums. It seems they plan to make money through canonical's tech support offerings.

The free disks seem to be funded by ubuntu founder. Mark Shuttleworth

Pure speculation here but perhaps they are getting money off dell for tech support training / distro customisation.
