I just got a Nikon D40x with two zoom lenses for my birthday the other day.
I'm looking forward to getting to grips with it.

I have to splash out on a copy of CS2 or CS3 soon.

    lol....my claim to fame.

I was also the first person in Ireland to maintain a web page with a contact database for peeps looking to play Doom or Doom 2 via modem, back in the bad oul days before we had Internet hosted game servers. Yes kids, thats right...once upon a time you used to have to dial up your opponent, and play using 14K and 28k modems.

Uncle Shiva is very, very old :(

Well....I took a break for a number of years. I was bored in work one day and I came across Boards, and I was pissed off that my nickname was already registered. I did a quick root around to see who the dirty thieving b**tard was who stole my nick, an found loads of old posts by me :)

Cloud had migrated all the old posts from the early Quake.ie forum to Boards, and my account was still intact after all those years. I couldn't remember my password, and my old IOL email account I used to sign up was long dead, so I couldn't get a reminder email. I just guessed by using a few of the old passwords I used to use, and bingo...one of them worked.

And you're not much taller now, Pal :p

I'm sure I can sort something out for you. CS3 Extended alright?

I remember those days, when 5 digit baud counts were something to aspire to having. I still have the box from my first ever aftermarket modem. A serial US Robotics 28k, I payed a ruddy fortune for it too.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 594 ✭✭✭Gizmodeon

    I remember the old 28k modems :o

I haven't had a modem for about nine years now
it was ISDN, then double, then broadband

I miss Doom....and Quake...and floppy Disks (cds scratch so easily!)
I think I have loads of floppys up in the attic, stuff like worms and Kings quest:D

I miss floppy floppy discs! 5.25" ones that made a satisfying "clunk" noise when you closed the lock gate. I found an old one the other day and a bunch of disks in my attic and I've been wondering since could they be made to be Vista compatible! Given my Lightscribe drive wasn't I doubt it's possible.

I still have Worms and Sim Earth on floppy here somewhere. And a copy of Doom on three discs. Back when the only thing you needed to copy a game was two floppy drives.

    Hehe.
I started of on a modem 10 years ago. I thought 6k a second was fast and if i got it one night id be in school the next day bragging how fast i got a 3.5mb song

Now i get pissed off if my d/l speed drops below 200k :o

    My first computer had Pong
Looked like this with orange lettering
    Possible from Digital :P

    tandy-trs80.jpg

I think it's still in the attic...my dads too sentimental to throw it out:rolleyes:

I remember the flippin ZX80 and using the ZX81. And ohhh and the fond memories of spending about 6 hours typing in a machine code program onto my Oric-1 1Mhz cpu and 48K ram, cost £130 3rd hand back in the year... (rather not admit) - and real keys, not like the membrane spectrum, only for it to crash and have to do it all over again, and again...:(

5.25" Floppy disks - pahhhh, real sad crusties (like me) used c-60 cassette tapes:D:D and waited for an age (well it seemed like 2 hours but was probably 25 mins) to load Zorgons Revenge. only for it to freeze. but for those magical few minutes of stunning graphics before the crash - it was all worth it:D

    Happy daze...

Still have my most of my collection of old 8-bit and arcade stuff in the attic. What a wasted youth:p

That said, it's all getting closer to ebay to pay for airsoft addiction:p

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,984 ✭✭✭NakedDex

I hated cassettes though. I tried and tried but I couldn't abide the loading. It just didn't sit well with me at all. I was too impatient. Consequently until I got my grubby mitts on my first 5.25" drive I didn't bother with much with computers. Even my old Spectrum, Commodore and Amiga, giants in their time, didn't please me at all.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,401 ✭✭✭Shiva

I also had 3 incarnations of the Amiga. I friggin loved that machine. My mates were all buying 386's and telling me they were the future of computing and gaming, and oh how I would laugh and point to my Amiga's stunningly brilliant graphics, with its dedicated graphics chip and superior sound.

Wireframe flight simulators and beep-beep sounds on your crappy 386 ? HA !!
Leisure Suit Larry ? Double HA !
And then my brother bought a 486 and showed me Doom.

    Thus an addiction was born.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 594 ✭✭✭Gizmodeon

I remember getting grounded for playing leisure suit larry.....
    ha ha ha
my brother kept nicking it back when we got caught
now my little brother deals with the same issue and GTA
    ha ha ha:D

Smart people bought 386's. Smarter people migrated from Amigas to 486's. Amigas were superior to the 386 but if you jumped straight to the 486 it was a forward step. Man what a jump that was though.

Leisure suit larry rocked. It was just the right amount of comedy and filth. The new ones are all just pure sleaze though.
