Tks Smurph, sorry to here Martin just missed out on a ticket last night. you whispered something in his ear at the table when I was his button, was it don't let that fcuker bully you ?

Nah, Martin hasn't played in the S.E. much and I was telling him bout the guy with the check shirt and glasses, sitting on his right, who constantly bangs his chips on the table..... and when he has a good hand he bangs them louder, almost like Morse Code:D:D

Hi Nicky, good read so far.

Suppose you were playing in a 20 player satellite (in the Macau) for 2 tickets into a 1000 euro tournament, and some guy who had registered over the phone shows up late and claims he got lost (!). Suppose also that this guy is a poker pro.
If it was 30 minutes after the official deadline time, would you agree to let him play ?

You might want to think a bit before you answer.

    Excellent read Nicky fair play...

    TKS Jay

    1) Final table, 7 left out of 130+ players in a €1k event, your 3rd in chips. Winner gets €45k 2nd €25k etc etc Other 4 players below you evenly stacked 6th and 7th treble their buy in so profit of €2k for them then money gets nice. 2 day event.. Whats your game plan? Attack and destroy or Chill???

with 7 left its time to attack for me with 10 left I usually chill a little.

    2) 1 limper same tourny, 4 players left you hold KK on the button and raise. SB & BB fold. Limper re raises all in and has you covered. Call fold or do you break your fingers getting your chips over the line?

I go with the breaking my fingers bit

    3) How highly do you rate Tramore as a sea side resort?

    super beach

    4) Do you love Dunmore east as much as I do?

No I wouldn't think I do but its all right, I worked on a fishing boat out of Dunmore for a spell in the mid nineties

    5) What level of income/earnings/winnings should justify a player turning pro.

its person specific. For someone with a family I think they would want to see at least two years of profit of 4 times there salary and have a years outgoings separate from there poker roll. I'd imagine that for a player with a family to hit a bad downswing the pressure is enormous. I also think the type of job there giving up and how easy it would be to get back into the into the work force if it didn't work out warrant strong consideration.

    6) If you were to play live full time 5 nights a week for 48 weeks of the year, tournys limited to €200+ buy ins at weekends and playing cash 3 out of other 5 nights for 8 hours per night what level of earnings could a player of your standard expect? Serious question and if you want to answer the question you can put your answer in income brackets i.e €50k / €70k income €80k to €100k income etc etc.

I think it would quiet difficult to hit the €50,000 but I'm assuming you mean the standard live 1/2 game

    7) Is Gavin your bitch and is Pat Storan jealous or do you both just spit roast valor and be done with it?

    8) The night i offered you and Pat a bed for the night would you have

    a) Stayed on the couch or

    b) Crept into bed with Pat in the dead of night and said nothing.

well to use a phrase coined by rounders123 " all three of us have unblemished records of heterosexuality". You on the other hand I always thought batted for the other side and I always assumed it was the rim of a boy is what you enjoyed. In fact I was quiet surprised when I herd you got married. I suppose people shouldn't make assumption's but the fact that the crew you hung with in Waterford were into producing and staring in musicals probably influenced my thinking.

    9) How long does it take you to get to grips with the dynamics of your table and how do you remember this information on each player.

Very player specific some I get to grips very easily other's are harder a lot don't know what there doing there self. I like to think I have good recall of players

    10) Point out a weakness in my game from the limited table time we have.

We haven't played much but if you think about it you have ever actually won a single pot against me. This is because I picked up an obvious consistent tell early playing with you. Now I'm not going to tell you what it is as I'm sure I'll be able to utilize it in future. But because you brought my sexuality into question , If anyone who plays with Jay regularly wants to know what it is just pm me.

    Cheers Man. Up the Deisce.

    Np and gl for 2008

    Jay

I suppose ya have a point about the choir boys, musical loving, groupie type lads I used to hang with in Waterford but sure they were lovely singers. Still cant believe you outed me live on boards. My marriage will crumble now.

My daily routine is pretty much central to my 9-5 job.. Whats your routine like? Do you have "working hours" where you play online the same time for the same amount of hours every day?

I really just play online when I feel like it but I try to get in 4 hours a day. I don't count one tabling Mtts as really playing and will always have one on while watching TV.

What are the luxuries in life of being someone who relies on poker as a main source of income?

You are your own boss so you keep your own hours and you should have the money to buy what you want when you want it

    And the negatives?

Very unhealthy for me anyway in the winter, I can go weeks without seeing daylight. In the summer I keep better hours and am more active

Do you not get tired of seeing the same faces every time at your regular casino? Do you not think it affects your game playing the same people on a regular basis?

I dont go that regularly anymore, I play 8 live tournaments max a month these days, I think I played 6 in January and that includes two festivals

Some friends have roped you into playing a charity donakament that is being held in your local where people have heard you are a full time poker player.. Would this put pressure on you not to let the donkeys show you up and show everybody that you are as good as they heard you to be.

I used to have a real problem with inertia, the best piece of poker advice I ever came across is " its not enough to be a good player, you must also play well ". I try to try anyway these days no matter what I play

Going back to the days where you weren't as good as you are now. What was the experience of playing in your first major tournament like? Did you get found out quickly or did you surpass your expectations?

I played well and and wasn't out of my dept.

Apologies in advance for all the naive questions!!!

    Thanks for doing this!

    YW

This has been a good read

    TY

you are heads up in a significant live tounament with 100k for first and 50k for second. You have 60% of the chips in play, with a lot of play left, and consider yourself evenly matched with the other player and he recklessly offers to make it winner take all do you take it

Probably not but it would be bankroll dependant, If I had a €300k roll I might take him up.

But doesn't it show how far your game has progressed in that short space of time. Nicky now a poker pro & that old fcuker is probably a bust out degenerate gambler trying to scratch a living playing €5 re-buys.

Yeah whatever happened that guy, he was a decent player

Have you ever thought, with your teaching ability, of maybe giving group coaching say to up & coming players in Blazin Aces. I always like the idea of someone putting something back into any game whether it be soccer, rugby poker

I give my time freely to anyone who asks. I think its unfair to compare a commercial enterprise like blazing access to voluntary organizations that promote sports. If I was a soccer player I'd have no trouble giving my time to an armature club. but a poker club is just a club in name they are all purely profit driven. I like everyone else paid to play poker in the place and I don't think that blazing aces contributed in anyway in my development as a player except for it being an outlet to play in. I remember a conversation with you approx two years ago Dave where you advised me to stop playing there because you considered my game would stagnate and wouldn't develop if I continued to play there regularly. I'll say again I have no problem with and give my time freely do help people with there game but I totally disagree with the suggestion that I should do so in conjunction with a commercial venture.

I was on the way back from playing golf in Kinsale that night. The tunnel was closed and I got lost driving around cork for 90 minutes, decided to drop into the macau for a coffee when i finally found Patricks Quay to take a break from driving. Soft addition to the prizepool really

Firstly Nicky a super thread, I really enjoyed it & it must be a runner for thread of the year.

When making the suggestion of coaching I really didn't mean that you should be going to Blazin Aces or any other commercial enterprise poker / casino. I used that only as an example as that is where you would find the players. I was also thinking of it on a commercial basis & possibly, for want of a better word "employed" by the commercial outlet, with the players paying a fee for your services. It would also be a way of promoting poker & improving the standard.

I totally agree that you owe Blazin Aces or any other poker club nothing & as you rightly say it was only an outlet to play your game.

I hope I can take some of the credit then for the development of your game in the advise I gave you about moving on from your local club. I don't think you could have improved your game to the extent you have by just playing there on a very regular basis.

I wish you the very best for 2008 & the future & if you remember one of my predictions in a boards thread for this year was that you will take down a big one. It would be well deserved, great for Waterford poker & that "old fcuker", if he's still around, would have something to crow about.

    Well done.

sound Dave and ty, I hope my reply didn't come across as curt towards you or indeed blazinaces it wasn't meant as suck. TBH while I understand what your saying I think any coaching I could do would be just pointer based and very basic, coaching for cash is very common a obviously beneficial but I'm not sure that it would be as relevant for tournament players.
