Microsoft Windows updates failure

I reinstalled the OS (XP sp2) last month and the following updates are failing since

Security Update for Windows XP (KB924667)
Security Update for Windows XP (KB927779)
Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool - January 2008 (KB890830)

The computer is working fine, its just annoying to see the update alert eveytime I use the computer and having to see it try an install the failed components every time I close it down. Ive tried updating direct from the MS site but it still fails. Any thoughts?

is the installer service running

start run
type in services.msc
press okay
right click on windows installer and click start, if it starts try again
