Having listened to the Christmas song since I was a nipper, I have now come to wonder what exactly are Rooty Toot Toots and Rummy Tum Tums.

Can anyone enlighten me?

Thats where I know it from. I always took it to be the noise of the drummer playing away during the song. Seeing as nobody actually had a drum when we sang it, it just sufficed to say rumpa pum pum instead.
Probably just as well we didnt actually have drums.

I'd say the first person to come up with the idea of it rhyming with drum and flute is right!

It's almost like cockney slang for flute (rooty toot toot) and drum (rummy tum tum)
