How much content is ok to republish?

For example can you take a paragraph or two from an article on independent.ie and republish this on your site with a link at the end of the paragraph stating ''to read the rest of this article please go to independent.ie?

AFAIK you need permission to reproduce anyone else's copy. However, summarising it and linking over is fine. Most people won't mind you using a snippet and giving them credit but be sure to ask first. I've had a few chats with a few publishers and they've gotten nasty with people stealing content.

    Cover your ass! :D
