Gas Fire

    Hey, Im hoping someone knows whats wrong with my gas fire. When I press the knob in and turn it (holding it in) it sparks the fire and the fire starts. but when I take my hand away from it the fire stops (with the gas coming out :eek:) does anyone know why it wont stay on? its an oldish gas fire like.

    I don't have a gas fire but I have an oil stove and had the same problem and found the starter or burner was damp from all the rain over the summer. However, as yours is gas I would not tamper with it. Might be an idea to ring Bord Gais or log onto their website. I am sure someone there would give you advice. Good luck

    usually you have to hold to knob in for about a minute if you haven' t been using it

    Remove the 'radiants' (white porcelain-like things surrounding the flame) and hoover any dirt or dust off them (carefully, they're fairly brittle.) Hoover any dust or dirt off the burner surface. My mam's old gas fire needed this doing every year or two to prevent the symptoms you describe.
