You know, I may be putting myself under fire here, but I went to see Ratatouille last night, and although I enjoyed it, I have to say it strikes me as one of the most over-rated movies in a long time. It's not that I had any high expectations of the film or anything, because on the whole I just don't buy into any hype, or at least try not to, but after seeing reading all the gushing comments about it, and seeing how highly rated it is, I'm a little puzzled.

Don't get me wrong, it is a good movie, but just not this super amazing awesome totally great masterpiece a lot of people are making it out to be. Am I missing something here?

It's about a rat who wants to be a chef.

Haha, you got me all wrong.
I'm in the same boat as you...I don't get it why every other year when one of these CGI movies is released, it's such a big deal.
I'm tired of seeing critics give these movies 5 stars etc.. becasue they are 'heart warming' or 'for the whole family to enjoy' when more often than not, they are just average movies with nothing special about them except for the way they were made.

Well, I definitely think this one was better than most other CGI animated movies I've seen, because on the whole they just leave me cold.

Downloaded and watched it. Quality of it was quite poor so I couldn't be wowed by the animation but I thought the story was so dull I turned it off after about an hour.

This is usually my problem when a film gets overhyped. I really expect something special and then I come out disapointed - Garage and Suberbad being recent examples. Sometimes it's inevitable that you get somewhat caught up in the hype and disapointment rears it's ugly head. (although for me Ratatouille was one of those cases were the hype was justified).

The lesson to learn here? Ban opinions on films being aired until everyones seen the thing :p

Nah, I wasn't really expecting much at all considering my general opinion on most CGI animated films. Infact, I pleasantly suprised by the film.

I really haven't got caught up in any hype for a long time.

I saw Ratatouille at the weekend with my other half.. we're both in our early 20's, thought it was brilliant!! I hadn't read reviews but just presumed it was more of a kids film!! Was realy great!!

So what if it's no Toy Story? I don't dislike Abbey Road because it's not as good as Revolver. This or Shrek 3? Put it that way.

But you perfer one over another thats the debate , at the end of the day toy story was pure genius every thing else followed it and I have yet to see it beat.Toy Story ftw

Meh, I didn't even like Toy Story that much.

Well if you didn't like Toy Story then it was unlikely that you were going to like Ratatouille.

Everyone gets caught up in hype if they read great reviews before going to a film and it's unavoidable that one's expectations are adjusted whether one realises it or not. I hadn't read much about Ratatouille beforehand other than getting some vibe that it hadn't done well in the US and a positive review by Michael Dwyer in the IT.

    Regarding hype:
The Bourne Ultimatum got great reviews and the theme seemed to be that it was the best of the Trilogy although I thought it was the worst. That might have been that I was just so irritated with Nicky's character who suddenly had a whole new backstory that was inconsistent with the previous two films. When you get a logic breakdown like that then it's hard to invest in the rest of the film.

Similarly a recent film of the week on these boards left me cold. I thought Grave of the Fireflies had little to reccomend it but one would have been forgiven for thinking it was one of the greatest films ever after reading some comments.

So, in short, it's impossible to get away from hype - all you can do is adjust your expectations based on previous hype and know what it is that you like yourself. So if the Pixar films are your cup of tea then you're likely to like Ratatouille and, if not, then you're unlikely to enjoy it.

Out of interest, have any of the Pixar films appealed to you?

I liked A Bug's life actually, i think its criminally under-rated. Its no the Iron Giant though. Ordered The Jungle Book region 3 from CD-WOW €15 kerr-ching!

As I've said before in this thread, I did not get caught up in any hype for the film at all, and I've also said that I wasn't expecting too much from it because of previous CGI animated films I didn't really enjoy.

It actually suprised me in that I liked it more than I was expecting to.

Got to see it at last yesterday..bloody marvellous. What a superb looking movie in 2.35:1. Great characterisation and story..the movement of the rats was amazingly well done. Interesting to see a short movie beforehand "Lifted" directed by sound supremo Gary Rydstrom of Stars Wars fame. In fact the sound for Ratatouille was also incredible..might get this one on HD.

    I agree .
The third Bourne film was by far the worst of the trilogy.
I'd even go to say it added nothing to the plotline .
    It wasnt needed.

I haven't seen this yet but I think I'll wait, the last time a CG film like this was out and everyone was telling me to go see it... it was Finding Nemo and I really didn't think that was very good at all.

That's a class movie! Love it, gets better and better after every viewing.

I think Ratatouille is the best Pixar feature made so far. It even managed to impress me more than the original Toy Story did when I saw it in cinemas back in '95.

I liked Ratatouille, but I can't help but feel the praise for it is slightly over the top. It was excellently animated, but I've come to expect that from Pixar and that isn't enough in and of itself to impress me. The story was well told, but felt ultimately lacking somewhat (I'm not even sure what was missing, I just wasn't as involved as I was in Finding Nemo, Toy Story, Monsters Inc. etc). It's possible I've just come to expect too much of Pixar, as I've yet to be disappointed by them (I never saw Cars mind you).

Brilliant film. Went to see it last night at a late viewing (no kids) and everyone there (myself and g/f included) loved it.
It was non stop entertainment and it was probably the best Pixar movie I've seen since Toy Story.
I tried my best to ignore the hype, and wasn't expecting it to be that good.... it blew me away to be honest.
    Superb stuff!

Got the region 3 DVD and watched it last night. It was good, but didn't live up to my expectations. I'm a huge fan of Pixar - especially Toy Story 2, Monsters Inc., Finding Nemo and The Incredibles (Also bought Brad Bird's The Iron Giant, but haven't seen it yet).

But I don't thing Ratatouille is quite up there with the best. Not sure why - the story's perhaps not quite so clever, with less knowing winks to the adult audience, and I have to say the animation didn't wow me. Maybe it's because there are so many human characters in it, it looks more like a cartoon than most of Pixar's other films which completely transport you to their world. I think Finding Nemo has been Pixar's most impressive visual work, although the short clips of their next film Wall-E look impressive. But while Ratatouille shows a lot of flair, it didn't seem much of an advance technically.

A good film, but didn't quite live up to the hype IMO.
