streaming video in linux

Most the time I use my laptop (inspiron 8600) to stream videos from my windows share over wifi (802.11b) . Normally xvid files of tv shows.
In windows this works fine most of the time, maybe a small be of stuttering but noting major.
But in Ubuntu 7.10 it locks up frequently. I use VLC in both windows and linux and have tried changing the buffering settings in VLC but it makes no difference.
In linux I have my shared folders mounted using smbmount.
I really like ubuntu but its a pain in the ass to have to boot windows everytime I want to watch one of my video files.

Can anyone think of any possible solutions?
I would really applicate it.

Are you using ndiswrapper for the wifi drivers perchance?

VLC lets you stream from a network source. I use this to open files on my NAS now and again if they're really big and it works fine. File --> Open File --> Network --> enter URL where it says 'HTTP/HTTPS/FTP/MMS'.

Ok , are you saying I would be better off hosting the files from http or ftp rather then windows share?

Would it be worth your while? I think the 802.11b wireless throughput is really the problem.
