Looking for an open source game engine.

Hi, I'm not entirely sure if this should be in programming or game editing, let me know if it is and I'll move it.

I need some advice. I've been thinking of creating a World War One-esque dogfighting game for a while, and have been looking for a good freeware flight simulator engine but with no luck. It needs to be robust enough for me to import custom models and textures (eg large zeppelins, huge triplane bombers, armoured trains, ships, particular building types, etc), but simplified enough to accomodate my less-than-average level-building skills. In a perfect world it would have first-person and third-person viewpoints, with an aditional first-person viewpoint where you can shoot from the cockpit with a handgun, but I'm not holding my breath. Graphics wouldnt have to be anything special, its more of a personal project.

SO. Is this too tall of an order? Any help/suggestions/advice would be greatly appreciated.

TO make money from? I doubt it. Saying that, would you consider using a game, and making a mod for it?

Look at the Bettlefield series, to see how people used the game engines to make mods. I think there are some Flight Sim mods out there, so it may be worth looking into.

If all else fails, look into modding QuakeWorld. Not sure how, though.

Googling for open source flight sims turns up various others.

In terms of generic engines, Ogre3D and Crystal Space are two that spring to mind, and there's lots more out there.

If you've never done any game development before though, you might be better off putting together a top-down 2D version for a start. Something like XNA or PyGame will help with that.
