Buying new in Europe

Hi Folks,

Did a search, but couldn't find anything relevant.
I am on a years assignment in Germany at the moment, and I'm thinking of buying an A5 coupe (20k difference in price)
Has anyone here bought a car in the EU and brought it back?
Am I correct in saying I can order a new car in right hand drive over here?

Any info would be appreciated.

you can order right hand drive, UK / Irish spec. Do it sooner rather than later and you should not have to pay VRT.

Go into a showroom and have a chat.

Shouldn't be an issue. British soldiers assigned around europe do that regularly.

Isn't there something in the rules for importing about not being eligable for not paying the VRT if you are only on assignment?

Check in to it thoroughly, otherwise you may end up getting stung for VRT next year when you return.

OP, you'll need to have the car registered to you at your German address for at least 6 months before brining the car home to avoid the VRT. I think you'll need proof of residence also.

Any main dealer will order you a RHD car. A sale is a sale.

The residence bit is going to be the tricky part ...especially in Germany with all its bureaucracy.

Anmeldebescheinigung, Abmeldebescheinigung, Lohnsteuerkarte, Sozialversicherungsnachweis, Zulassungspapiere, Versicherungsnachweis ... the list is endless, and as the VRT people aren't muppets, they'll want to see it all.

Problem is ...you won't have it all if you're only on assignment.

Thanks everyone for the replies, I do have my own appartment here, and bank account/telephone bill in my name.
I also got some official looking papers from the government.
I'll check it out when I finish work,

It's advisable to also keep petrol receipts, insurance receipts etc. AFAIK you'll need to put a bit of mileage on the car aswell, about 7,500kms.

You may find it cheaper to buy an EU re-import from a broker rather than buying from a German Audi dealer. AFAIK there is some EU department which does a regular survey on car price comparisons (before taxes). You might find that you can purchase the car here for export to Germany ex-VRT cheaper than the price from a German dealer. Export it on ZZ plates, then register it in Germany and then bring it back with you in 12 months time.

Probably easier to buy the car tax-free here and register it in Germany.
