Hi, Im just starting out doing some free lance work and im trying to get some idea of the rates to charge people. I have a number of projects to do including some general site updating, brochure sites and also some sites that require cms. What sort of price ranges would be associated with these types of work?

i don't think anyone will tell you. for competitiveness webmasters tend not to give out that sort of information publically

Probably true - so call some design/development companies and ask for quotes. It is amazing - you will see rates from 200 to 2000 for the same job, and sometimes the ones quoting 200 do better quality work (usually not though).

Decide what your time is worth per hour. Then double it. That's because for every billable hour you spend developing you'll easily spend another doing proposals, invoicing, and other unbillable work.

Given the skill set you'll probably use (design and cut and paste coding) I'd hazard a guess that €35 - €40 would be the kind of money you could charge.

Perhaps but I can't imagine it's in any way professional work at €200! Professional freelance designers should be charging anywhere between €50 and €100 per hour, depending on experience and the speed at which they can turn projects around. Now some people may balk at this but when I say professional, I'm talking about talented creatives with a strong knowledge of XHTML, CSS, standards, semantic markup and accessibility. Not some kid in his bedroom who thinks he can design websites (I would imagine these are the guys charging €200 per site).
