And got a very good grade would I be in with a chance of getting a place on the course for next year …. Even if I did not apply for the psychology course in the cao thing just the arts ??? Wound I be in with any chance

Hey, i'm going to be doing Arts in September, hopefully with Psychology, Sociology and Anthropology. I think if you get in the top 15 of your class with Psychology you can drop the other two subjects and go on to a Psychology degree in second year... that's my understanding of it, i may be wrong...

    shane,
My housemate did that last year. He did Psychology, sociology and philosophy or something of the sort. He said you have to get in the top 30 marks in the exams to be allowed do single honours in second year and there was something like 120 in the class.

Do a B.A single honours in Maths Physics, just for the sheer insanity of it.

Maths physics is a walk in the park compared to arts. Go for it. You only need a C3 in pass maths in the LC to understand it!

God bless you, I hope you like reading. Alot.

Aye, I was considering those three subjects too, but got the 3 combined would be a bit heavy, think I'd drop the Psychology and pick something like Medieval Irish and Celtic Studies or the like.

It is arts apparently, thats the insanity bit.

That's the general reaction i've been getting. I do like reading but am ever so slightly worried... will see how it goes! Might end up completely chaging my mind between now and September...:(

I foolishly chose Anthro and English and I was swamped for the entire year. It's not fun, believe me. You have a few weeks to change your mind though, so go to every thing and see what suits you best!

Yeah, one of the people who interviewed me gave me the same advice so that's probably what i'll do... I really want to do Psychology in 2nd year but I don't want to rely on getting in so I want to pick two subjects that i'd be happy to continue with. Not long now, eeek!

Lolz for first year at least you'll do fine just turning up to lecturers and reading what you can. Don't go thinking that every book on the list must be memorised!

I thought they had to drop it after second year no?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 833 ✭✭✭pisslips

No, I don't think so anyway.
Or you could do a B.A. double maths physic/maths which is the exact same as doing the Bsc. in theoretical physics and maths.

Ignore the naivity, but what jobs can people get out of doing an Arts Degree, I'd say 80%+ do Teaching.....but is that it??

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 9,878 ✭✭✭Rozabeez

My plan is to do sociology and anthro, then use it as the basis for community work or something. That's a few years off though.

Get yourself in a good Tutor group for Anthro. That's where you do the real work so you want to have a good TA and workgroup. It's where I messed up, I forgot to sign up for a group and got lumped into one that sucked balls!

    Not a bad compromise.

Well research and analytical skills are in high demand from a lot of companies, but I'd almost call a BA a stepping stone degree, it gives you a basis in one or two subjects, gives your those skills, allows you to add letters to the end of your name (seriously you never know what impresses employers) and lets you move onto a more advanced specialised postgrad.

ok, so i'm gonna be doing arts in Nuim this september, and i'm hoping to do computer science, math studies, and something like economics biology of geography as my third subject.

so really what i'm askin is info on math and comp science. is it really difficult. i done pass math for leaving cert and did very well in it, would i be capable of these subjects
i know they both require at least OB3 to get in.

any info about them would be great!

Well im a CSSE(Comp Sci & Soft Eng) and hopfully going into 2nd yr. They have changed the course this year. Last year I did 3 CS subjects along with the general science and arts students they where Databases(CS130), History of Computer Sci(CS154) & Computation(CS156). But this is what you are doing.

CS141 - looks like its a spilt from the stuff I did at the end of CS154 which is handy enough to do. Even if you are not good at it you will be in a group so just get someone who is good at it in your group.

CS142 - This is the same as CS156. Now I now find this easy but that is only because I did a more advanced module of this in the 2nd semester but I didnt at the time. But alot of people drop CS because of this module. It is hard but tbh if you work at it from the start you should be ok.

CS143 - Sounds like CS154 which is really easy I got 70% + in this module.

    When we are on this subject ;
Does anyone know what may be the min result you may need to get to be in the top 30th and don’t say 100% would you think 75 would get you into the top 30th

It does appear from looking at results from other subject that about 10 -15% people get first class honours which is70% but I cant personally speak for psychology.

Incidently I would recommend that Arts students carefully study the bottom table of arts subjects (second & third year) on page 29 of prospectus & pick subjects in first year that can be followed through into second & third year. This will ensure that you have a choice of dropping your least favourite or weakest subject after first year. For this reason I personally steered clear of Biology, despite it been my strongest leaving cert subject (A1 High). Some subjects such as history & geog can be done as a single honours after first year. You will get a couple of weeks to make up your mind.

Maths Studies in first year consists of a differential calculus course and a course on integral calculus. It's Honours Leaving Cert Standard in parts but it wouldn't be quite as difficult as the LC Honours paper. The modules are changing this year so the content and names of those courses might be slightly different. I haven't had a chance to look over the changes yet tbh. I would say that if you put a good bit of efort into the course you could easily do well in Maths Studies with a pass LC background. I did Maths Studies and a lot of the people in my class came from pass maths. Some of them got 1st Class Honours in their final degree in the subject so it's definitely doable as such

I'm not sure I get you. They change the timetables every year, so there's no combination of subjects you can do in first year that you can't continue on with. There's always certain subjects you can't do together, like last year, I couldn't do Media and Spanish for example, but if you pick three subjects in first year that are compatible, you will be able to continue on in second and third year with any combination of those three subjects.

I'm pretty sure there are some subjects in Arts that you cant do beyond first year. Not 100% sure of that now
