I've prolly already said it somewhere in this thread, but Vice City > all. The soundtrack and the atmosphere cannot be beaten in any current GTA game. San Andreas may have had lots more to see and do, but you just can't beat the 80s man ;)

    Vice city>All other rockstar titles:)

Has to be Vice City for me.

Before reading this thread, I would have said San Andreas, with Vice City a close second, but I got reminded of how great the atmosphere of VC is. As mentioned before, from finishing a mission and doing a wheelie on starfish island to beating up roller skaters near the lighthouse, the atmosphere is unbeatable, and for me, was verging on complete escapism.

Lets just hope that the staff at Rockstar come across this and take all our criticism into account :)

Vice City. great storyline, great sound track and Tommy Vercetti just oozed cool. :)

has to be GTA3, the sheer wow factor you got from the leap from 2d to 3d was unreal. the story line may of been better in the latter games but gta3 wins it for me.

    so it goes for me

    gta3 > VC > GTA1 > GTA2 > SA

Yeah GTA3 had a certain magic about it... good times.

SA is the best for me - only just got into it and I love it!

Though, as with other posters, I really wish Rockstar would bring the Mafia back into it.

thought SA's map was to big....Vice city was more or less the right size and had a great soundtrack....One thing I loike about SA was the auto aim with the assault rifles and the silenced pistols was very cool

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 22,479 ✭✭✭✭philologos

Doesn't the aiming thing not make it a lot less challenging though? Just my opinion but I like shooting without an auto-aim on it. (Unless I'm using a control pad that is)

No doubt in my mind that the first one is the best. It had the simplest graphics but I played it as a child and those memories are going to forever be locked-away in my head. I have bought and played the other GTA's but things like San Andreas and Vice City just don't compare to the first one.

I think it all depends on which one you play first, and at what age you play it. Childhood memories are hard to erase.

i beat gta2 , vice city and san andreas 100% and i loved playin the three of them but i picked san andreas because the way that you took over gang territories was brilliant in my opinion:cool:

funny how people's opinions can differ... that's the one part of the game that put me off bothering to complete it (
Think I got as far as the last mission, but you have to be in control of a certain amount of gangland to start the mission
    )

There are some decent advantages to taking over territories - because you have to deal with waves of attack, you get loads of free ammo/weapons in between waves. There are also health and armour pickups which make things easier again.

Also, its great that you can completely wipe out all other San Andreas gangs. You never get the "Our hood is under attack!" message after you get 100% of territories taken over.

Hint: If you do get that message, just save your game, and it won't be under attack anymore, and the territory will still be yours.

I agree; it's too big for my liking but perhaps that's because I'm used to the older versions of GTA which have smaller maps. The best is - no doubt - the original GTA with the birds-eye view.

GTA 3 is 4.99 europeans at Play.com right now (for PC).

My favourite story wise is Vice city but I love San Andreas for all the stuff you can do. I love tearing through the desert in the monster truck. Vice city stories is also pretty damn good. I thought the radio stations were gas

Went back to Vice City for the craic yesterday. God you really notice the little things that were fixed for San Andreas, particularly the looking around while running. Tommy just stops and goes to first person. As I use this a lot this drove me nuts.
I did play long enough to get the six star wanted level that Ruu was on about yonks ago. Two ways:
    1. Tank or gunship rampaging!
    2. Second story window of Sunshine Autos and a rocket launcher
Just keep blasting everything in sight!

Still think SA is the best. Small niggles aside [gangs(long since eradicated) food and gym work, girlfriends (100% but keep dropping)] this is my favourite game ever. Must have over 250 hours at this stage. Current save is 190 and I don't always save etc.

not to be a nit-picker it's a 2D plan view with fake 3D (simulated perspective)
Isometric is a 3D view with no perspective. ;)

Probably GTA3 then GTA1, then VC,

Absolutley hated GTA2, thats where they started with the rival gangs thing, I have allways hated this, it takes away from the simple pleasures of runnin amok with automatic weapons.

GTA1 also had the Pickuptruck song, thats reasonenough to love thegame IMO

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,971 ✭✭✭Holsten

    GTA 3 by far.

No prob. Rare to find somebody on boards that doesn't get all uppity over a minor correction. +1 Naikon

P.S. I'm probably one of the few people on boards who did lots of that drawing lark. Only for that I wouldn't have a clue.

Back on topic: Started SA again, reinforced my decision that it's the best one. Sure the first one was fun and all but it is nothing compared to the 3D ones. And before anyone says it, I did start on that and I loved it but with exception of GTAII each one has taken a massive step forward. (I'm not including LCS and VCS as they were designed for a lesser platform) Therefore SA ftw, and hopefully IV will play as good as it looks......

I remember Christmas back in the day when the first GTA came out, TBH I knew nothing about it but my older brother got it. I remember meself playing the oul' Grand Trismo on the Play Station and then looking over my brothers sholder at the computer and saying to meself,"Jaysus, thats brilliant!" I couldn't stop playing it. When I went away to do stuff I always looked forward to going home just to play it! It's lying in the spear room of my house right now and once I attemted to play it, but sadly it doesn't work (awww). But wasn't it great though, once you've completed one city you move on to a new one..... Sorry everybody for that blast from the past.

We got a sort of a downloadable thingy of GTA London '69, but I didn't play much of it, so I don't know much about it... All I remember is me always nicking Police cars, and god they were fast!
I didn't own GTA 2, but me cousin did, he had it on the Play Station... and the 2D GTA games weren't as good on the Play Station so that sorta' put me off, but I thought if it was on PC it would change my opinion.

GTA 3 was great, 3D and all that, but it isn't me favorite. It hadn't any motorcycles or any proper things that could fly apart from that Dodo thing but that was impossible to fly! And people say they like that gritty feel to it, but I thought it could've been a little bit sunny(er), but there was still nothing wrong with it. My game had something wrong with it, it kept on getting stuck which was a real pain in the hole because you'll make progress and it'll get stuck without it being saved.

Vice City! Hell Yeah! What a game! This was definitly my favorite Grand Theft Auto game, if not my favorite game EVER... Wait... it is my favorite game EVER! The seenery, the gameplay, the missions were great, the first real flying in a GTA game, the Miami-Drugs-Scarface feel of it, the soundtrack and it's the 80's man! Could you look for anything more? No... is the answer to that retorrical question. The radio was flippin' gas craic, you could buy the game just for that! Except that would be a little bit silly when you could just buy the soundtrack. But V Rock man! The volcher! Lovefist and Lazlow! Driving by the palm trees while listening to "She Sells Sanctuary" or "2 Minutes to Midnight" with the sun setting... beautyful! I was always going into the Stadium in Downtown in between 9 to 12 in the night to earn some money, and it was great fun! I could go on all day talking about how brilliant Vice City was but I've to move on to San Andreas... and that'll take a while to.

San Andreas... wow! The map is huge! There is ALOT to do, and you could get at least a hunderd hours out of it if you don't hate it like alot of posters are saying. But thats fine, everybody is entitled to their own opinion and I respect that, but saying stuff like San Andreas is TOO big and TOO empty is not looking at it reallisticly IMO. Like there does be alot of country and desert between every city, and there's no exception for Los Santos, San Fierro or Los Venturas. Maybe some people are making a point about that area 51 thing but area 51 is believed to be in the middle of the Nevada Desert and it was brought in. I thought it was actually a good idea, and I liked that mission. It isn't like it had any change to the main story, I thought of it as sort of a extra mission... you know, just for fun. Like it really doesn't make any sence to dislike it for those reasons (no offence). I liked the whole game which is what is important.

Liberty City Stories... it introduced Grand Theft Auto into portable gaming. IMO it's a God send. I love GTA, I love PSP, you put the two together... PERFECT! I can't complain about anything in it. People complained in another thread that it's a Downgrade from San Andreas, but what do you expect! You don't expect all the extra stuff out of it and put it on to a UMD alot smaller then a normal CD, and it's alot smaller console aswell. But the game it self was fun, good story and had everything and more from GTA 3.

Same with Vice City Stories, it had lots of fun in it. It was also some serious step up in portable games. It was better then Liberty City Stories too. It had helicopters, planes, boats, jetskis, plane-boats, motorbikes, bicycles, quads and ofcourse cars! You can run businesses across the city, you can swim, there's new types of vigalanty missions in helicopters as an Air-Ambulance and Fire-Copter were you have a big bucket of water to put out fires, and not to forget the story. And the 80's soundtrack is back! My favorite quote is from V Rock's 'Cousin Ed',"Ragen man, F**K YEAH!" Brilliant! And that song "You Got Your Balls to the Wall" is class (Damian Duff singing it and all, if you seen the video). But, most of all, but... that famous Vice City atmoshpere is there which makes it feel fantastic to play, a treat to play on the move and at home, class.

    My Favorite downwards:
GTA Vice City, GTA San Andreas, GTA Vice City Stories, GTA 3, GTA Liberty City Stories, GTA, GTA 2, GTA London '69.

    (that took me a while)
