Self Employed return to regular employment - VAT Question

    Hi folks.

Quick question. I have been self employed for almost 3 years. For a variety of reasons I have decided to get back into regular employment. I am VAT registered and currently operating as a sole trader.

Is it legal/possible for me to start work with a new employer but still do jobs on the side with my old business and stay VAT registered for those purposes?

Or do I need to close business fully and de-register for VAT?

yes you can remain VAT registered and work as an employee, you will hve to submit vat returns even if nil and when you do work on side this will be recorded as normal self employed income.

Just make sure that your employer will not have an issue with doing work in addition to their duties

As stated earlier you can do both but you will still have to file VAT returns and a Form 11. Depending on your turnover you may want to consider whether it actually makes sense to still be VAT registered for you. If not, you can get a form from Revenue and cancel your VAT registration.
