Restricted viewing of web - is it possible?

    Hi,

    Not sure if this software even exists but I'm hoping it does. I need some software that can be installed on a computer so that it will restrict the webpages that can be seen - I want to stop all but one website to be able to be seen on the particular computer. Thanks.

    Any competent web-filtering programme can do it. Dansguardian, one of my favourites, allows for so-called white-listing. You only allow sites you want seen, and block all the rest.

    Hi rogue-entity! Thanks.

    It says its not free for commercial use - so if you want to use it in a business setting then I'm guessing you are not meant to use it. Do people usually just ignore this or do they pay for it?

    EDIT; Sorry just read it properly and as long as it is used for a non-profit organisation it is ok - so happy days - thanks rogue-entity.

    if you only want one site to be seen other ways

    don't have any dns settings ( or put in junk ones ) and add the website to the hosts file

    find out the IP of the site
    don't have any gateway on the TCP/IP settings and just have a static route to that website via the IP of the machine

    use proxy.pac / wpad.dat to filter the sites http://www.schooner.com/~loverso/

    No problem boffin. I am not sure how your network is setup, but DansGuardian only works on linux/unix, and you need a proxy on the machine as well to fetch the pages, but it will work a treat.

    Not very computer literate so I am a bit confused about most of the stuff you both said in your replies :eek:

    But I am going to had a ramble around the settings and tabs on my computer and maybe I'll find these things that you are talking about and then it will become a bit clearer!! :)

    Hi Boffin. I've used a program called freeproxy to share an internet connection between several computers. AFAIK you can set this up to use a whitelist (i.e. a list of only those sites that you wish to be viewed.)

    If you only want to view one site on one computer (am I correct in assuming its a kiosk type operation?) could you mirror the site onto the computer and disconnect the net completely?
