I was just about to post about this but got beaten to it. Looks a nice bit of kit and also nice on the eyes. It's 350Euro on the freecom website but I would never expect them to be that competitive.

The 250gb is about €250 delivered from SPV.
320gb is out of stock. €199 + delivery is a good price. Mostly good reviews on SVP.

I've used the 250gb one before and its quite nice ... played anything I threw at it.

I'd be getting this if I actually watched telly

Nice feature with this as well is its a LAN drive

Great gizmo (I have one), but it has 2 downsides:

- It won't play HD files (e.g. 700mb rips of 45 minute TV shows)
- It doesn't have subtitle support (so it can't play SRT/SUB files on foreign language movies)

Otherwise its a fantastic investment, and €120 off the retail price is a bargain.

Probably not as noisy as the Argosys..

.. if they get it again in the next few weeks (which they more than likely will), i'll buy it and sell the Argosys.

Hey TmB, I was about to buy this but then saw ur quote "It won't play HD files..." What format are they in? If I don't have a HD tv should I not worry about it since I wouldnt download it anyway?

You'd be looking for it's big brother, the MG-350HD. I have one of these, and I'm very pleased with it. It has wifi, and plays HD divx content.

To answer some of the above questions:

HD movie files are usually 1280x720, or 1920x1080. As stated in my example, if a downloaded TV show is 700mb and 40-45 minutes long, then its HD. Regular 350mb 45 minute shows are perfect (as are 700mb full length movies).

It does not allow recording....

Just in case anyone else has the same probs I had it turns out my CC company (MBNA) have a block on on-line dutch companies due to an increase in fraud. They ensured this went through for me. If your card is declined whilst trying to order this ring your CC company.

That looks the dogs nuts! A viable replacement for XBMC.

Questions....
1) Is there any special software needed on the windows server, or is it simple windows file sharing?

2) Is it possible to change the HDD out for a smaller one, as all my media is on a NAS?

3) How loud is it?

1) only if you want to write from the PC to it. (It comes with NDAS for this) For streaming from the PC there's nothing else needed (apart from sharing the directory)
2) Yes. (It'll run without a HDD, but can only use it for streaming then.) Depending on software running on the NAS, you might be able to stream from it.
3) I have the MG-35 (same as the one in the iBood offer) and it's pretty quite. Bit of a hum. Nothing more.

Here is a thread on an MG-35 Yahoo Group I'm a member of (since Freecom have stopped doing firmware updates, these guys have started writing custom firmware.... use at your own risk!). Anyhoo, here is the thread:

I am no expert but believe it is a hardware issue (more specifically
the chip inside the unit). There is a width limit on 720.

The 720p and 1080i capabilities refer to the vertical resolution of
the output and I think the unit upscales all material to 1280*720
when it is set to output 720p.

I don't think the limitation is mentioned in the spec's.

The new model HD 350 is supposed to handle HD material, although I am
in the UK and have not seen it on sale anywhere.

It can see the shared devices on the network.
For PCs etc on the network to see it, they need to be have NDAS installed and the box needs to NDAS enabled on it. That needs the MAC address of the device - it may be printed on the unit, or you may have to get it from Freecom... (I have the Mediagate version and it came with it)
It doesn't have wireless.

Maplin have something silimar. saw it in the shop here for €116 without a HD but with a 320gb hd from dabs it works out the same price or even slightly cheaper inc delivery
It doesnt have wifi but can also be plugged into a router directly. Plugs in tv as well.

bought this from Ibood, just wondering what the story is with delivery; there is no postal tracking from what I can see. I'm expecting great things from this; I hope to bung my music, photos and series onto it and fingers crossed I'll be able to stream from a shared folder on a network PC.
