This looks the biz, il probly get one. One problem though, it doesnt seem to have speed camera warning like the Tom Toms and others have. Would i be able to get some software to sort this out or something? I really need that as il be driving in the Uk and theres cameras everywhere?

I ran into this after typing the Aldi Sat Nav into Google:
    http://www.gpspassion.com/forumsen/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=40321&whichpage=2

Basically this model was out a year ago bragging 7 digit post code capability and it didn't work. They offered to take back and fix it for customers that complained. Then there are some people mad at workshop for not fixing the problem and that's it.

Might want to see if anyone updates that forum before buying it. Probably won't matter much to Irish users given the post code system we use here.

    ---edit
BTW, I assume this allows you to update maps after buying it. My brother has a Garmin and gets map updates. Are there Sat Nav systems out there that don't let you update maps? I was on the NavCam/Navteq website (same website, different URL's) and if it is that detailed then it is perfect for what I want it for.

Nobody seems to be replying on the gpspassion forum, anyone else know anything about this or a good active gps forum where i could find out a bit more about this unit incl. user reviews?

Heres the link to the official website:

    http://www.evesham.com/navcam/cms/navcam6400/overview.asp?e=11DB9A2F-F39E-4D5F-A4CC-A1B61E1A37EE

It says here it warns of speed cameras to. looks good but i had a look around the net and the 6200 (the older version) had a lot of problems which would make me nervous about buying. But theres none around that offer UK and Ireland at this price, so it seems like the best option.

Do these kind of offers usually sell out really quick? I wont get to an aldi till lunchtime.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,185 ✭✭✭1huge1

Ya these type of things sell very fast in aldi and lidl, ill be outside the one in childers in limerick a little past 8 to get mine

But I need to know if it updates roads 1st if not then I wont buy it
    they say on http://www.evesham.com/navcam/cms/na...C-A1B61E1A37EE
that it gives you free speed camera updates for 6 months so I'm assuming it does get updated
    thanks

The software on this is AA Navigator so there should be no problems updating maps.

We don't use postcodes here at all.

    thanks

Ill be there thursday morning for sure then

    Hi,

I've been searching for info about this all evening.

Does anyone know if this can be used 'off-road' so to speak. I'd like a handheld GPS for trekking but if this gadget can do both roads and tracks I'd buy it.

As for the software? AFAIK it's the latest version.

I need postal codes for the Uk, which would be the main reason il be getting it. Ill be doing a lot of driving over there. pparently there was a lot of problems with the older model with postcodes but if your just using it in ireland it shouldnt be a problem.

There was alos a lot of trouble with the battery in the older model, in that it took hours to charge and if it wasnt used for a few days the battery would go dead.

Other than that it seems ok, i reckon ill buy it anyway.

It also has spped cameras in the Uk - another essential for me

Thnaks for the links above - if anyone else finds out more about it let us know!

Not sure how good those in-car devices are for outside use, I got the Aris one a few months back & while it works grand in the car, it looks a bit fragile to take on to the hills. As well, the battery life isn't great (on the Aris at least) and you can't just shove in new batteries if it runs out.

A friend of mine has an old Garmin model from a few years ago that has survived being dropped, being left for an hour on a cairn in the rain etc. No where near as fancy but does the job in conjunction with an OS map.

Having said that, I'd still be tempted by the Aldi one as it's a very good price.

Well it appears that the speed cams think works well and the battery is now replaceable.

Thanks for that opus - I had a good look at the specs and it seems that I can use it in a map only mode which would suit me as I don't do long distance trekking - I'd mainly use it for geocaching and giving coordinates to Autoroute and Flickr etc.

dumb question but what do they mean by "Nav-Cam 6400 - 6 month activation tool" i take it is free Speed Cam updates for 6 months? or all updates i.e maps etc..?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,010 ✭✭✭mkennedy

what is aldi's policy re returning this if it turns out it doesn't suit you.

also, how do you actually update the mapping on it- do you need to connect it to a pc and download the update from the site thru' the pc.
(sorry i'm not familiar with these standalone gps devices tbh).
and how long are the updates available for?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 313 ✭✭nodolan

I don't think Aldi operate like Argos - if it doesn't suit you that is. I suppose it depends on the manager of the local store as well.

The updates come through a USB cable attached to your PC attached to the net - yes for 6 months AFAIK.

I am wondering anout this device does anybody know the coverage of Ireland what precentage is it? There is a simular GPS in xtra-vision at present for €199.99 but it only has 40% coverage of Ireland. I wonder about this one.

Can abody answer my question what is the coverage of Ireland on this product?

likely to be fairly complete, i'd say.
it's aa navigator which uses navteq data.

I emailed aa navigator a few months ago about just their software product alone and they said it was the "best coverage so far".

I just googled aa navigator ireland mapping - these links might be worth a look:
    www.aanavigator.com/software/index.asp and
    www.stalltheball.com/index.php/2006/09/13/aa_navigator_2006_for_ireland
