Is this the place to ask for advice about the above? It's a cross platform issue, so wouldn't suit either the windows or unix forums and yet it might not fit here because essentially I'm looking for tech support.

    Should I go on?

    All fixed.

It was a trojan that came in a zipped video converter - I guess AVG doesn't scan torrents.

trojan wouldn't allow even safe mode, so I was trying with some linux boot cds. Bitdefender couldn't update - the puter that got infected isn't on the web, it's a friends.

End of it all, the knoppix one was able to mount the hds and then I could delete what I needed to in prefetch etc. Fingers crossed I didn't fuck anything up, all seems to be working fine.
