spent 3 days there in November, the food is fantastic. Dunno about the resorts, as we were on a RTW trip and stayed in Georgetown. The seas are not supposed to be cleanest I believe, but if you go to Georgetown the people are dead friendly and from there you could easily go to the Cameron Highlands, or hop to Langkawi either - another island, duty free so cheaper beer.

I'd advise you not to waste all your time on the beach whilst your there - Malaysia is a fantastic country, and it'd be a shame to miss all of it while you're there to just see the beach. Consider Malaysian Borneo, if you like diving Semporna is a MECCA, and there's some beautiful islands you can stay on there and dive in Sipidan, also there's a wildlife camp called Uncle Tans where you stay in huts in the jungle and see wild crocodiles, orang-utans, snakes, tarantulas, scorpions.... we spent 3 nights there - absolutely fantastic. Loved every second of it. Consider it. Feel free to ask for more info
