Does anybody know of a good freeware program that does this?

I haven't used this but try SimpleDivX

A turorial on how to do it using SimpleDivX is here

Don't know if it works, I Googled the terms "freeware convert MPEG2 DivX" and got the videohelp site, went from there...

I'd recommend the divx convertor tool. You can get a free trial of it here: http://www.divx.com/divx/windows/converter/

Well that's the thing, I Googled too and got the same result but I was looking for recommnedations on something that someone had actually used. Thanks for the help though.

I actually have that but for some reason it doesn't recognise MPEG2 files.

Have a look here in the Multimedia category and see if there are any tools.

If there is nothing in the freeware section try some of the shareware although often the restrictions are quite tight. i.e. converts but no sound or converts small file sizes only etc.

    AutoGK should do it ?

There is always MeGUI which has a small learning curve but supports XviD & H.264

Commercial wise the easiest is Nero Recode as Nero-Digital ASP is just another derivative of MPEG-4 ASP like XviD & DivX. (In Nero Recode under ND Category, Nero Digital = MPEG-4 ASP & Nero Digital AVC = MPEG-4 AVC aka H.264)

Staxrip is another one more user friendly than MeGUI but I do not thing is is supported any more by it's developer.

You have to buy a $10 bolt-on to convert MPEG2 to Divx using Divx's own converter. The whole deal comes to $30 (or about €27 when you convert to Euro and add VAT on).

It won't break the bank, and I think it's well worth it. In addition, you get the "pro" version of the codec rather than the community version, which is optimised for hyperthreaded / dual core / dual CPU machines.

Another vote for Auto-GK. You can get the latest version here:

    Simple and free..
