Can anyone tell me why I need to have a phone line when ordering sky +

They came to install it and insisted that it be connected to the phone line.

    ???

Yes you do need a phone,
when installing the sky box they need to register it ,thats it.

you can take out phone line after they have left.
provided you have only one sky box.

It depends whether or not you have a single box or Sky+and multiroom. In my experience, they(Sky) don't seem to worry if you have one box and the phone line becomes disconnected (when I had my standard Sky box, the phoneline was disconnected for at least a year and they didn't bother me !).

However, with Sky plus boxes, and multiroom i.e. additional subscriptions from the same dish at 10£/month extra (that's the price in the UK) they will block your subscription channels after a few days when this happens. You will then have to ring customer services in order to get them unblocked. They will also send you a letter informing you that the phoneline is disconnected This has happened to me once when the kids disconnected the phone line accidentally. I was informed by a Sky engineer that the reason is to do with people using different boxes from different addresses. For example, someone could take out a subscription package, add an additional box and card for £10 a month extra, but use that box and card from another dish at a different location.
