check bad sectors?

Is there a good tool for checking/fixing bad sectors on hard drives? I'm running Ubuntu at the moment and am having trouble copying from data DVDs to HD - freezes, I/O error messages flying up the screen etc. The disks themselves work fine on another (Windows) machine.

Does the board you are running ubuntu on have a VIA chipset?

On BSD there is "fsck". I assume its on linux though its been years since I used linux.

Make sure you don't use fsck on a mounted filesystem, can do untold damage...
