i moved recently, and as a music lover for many years , moving my cd collection and finding a place to store them took a bit of effort , must have been about 500 cd's -- i am a recent covert to ipod, but still prefer quality of cd.
I wonder is 500 cd's excessive by todays standards ? -- a couple of years ago i used to buy a cd every week or so .

I've about the same, don't buy as many now as I used to (due to lack of funds, mostly) but a couple of years ago I'd buy 1 or 2 a week. Trying to cut down now and buying albums online as I'm emigrating soon and I already have enough stuff to bring with me without adding more!

My cd collection is big but needs more work, there's always room for more genres and moods

I got rid of most of mine, probably around the size you mentioned. I couldnt get them shipped over from Ireland to be with me.

500 is normal imo, especially if you've been a collector for a little while.

a good friend of mine has about 2000 cd's now, they literally take up one whole wall in her house. she has them insured. that's not including her vinyl either!!!!

I've about 1400 CDs not including vinyl. If I had to move them I couldn't see it being much of a problem, a few archive boxes from Argus and you'd get them all in.

Most of my cd collection is in my parents' house. These days when I buy a CD or DVD, I'm more worried about the space than the cost.

    Hard drive storage is great.

I plan to have a John Peelesque music wing to my house by 2015.

I moved relatively recently, with the help of some friends. First off they couldn't get over the number of CDs I have (600+), but when they saw I stacked them in alphabetical order they thought I was nuts:D

Recently though, I've been converted to the mp3 format. Easier to transport, and to keep in alphabetical order.

Could never live with just mp3s. Where's the love? Where's the sleeves? Where's the high and low frequencies?

With property prices as they are:

Where's the room to store all those CDs?:D

Good point --- when you download music , it is a bit like tuning in to good sounds on the radio, whearas buying a cd is more physical and personal (but more expensive !) -- artwork , and you can actually see what you own !!!

As much chance of that happening as all your CDs being destroyed tbh.

I use high quality MP3s(always encode at 320kb/s) usually and FLACs if I want 100% perfect sound. You can download cover art quite easily too. Down with buying CDs!

As handy as music stored on a hard drive is,i just much prefer going out and buying the actual disk with case and booklet.Get a nice rack for your collection and it looks very pleasing to the eye.Il listen to music on my PC when im browsing but for serious listening you cant beat a CD on a good seperates system.I find it too easy to skip tracks and not listen to albums fully when i have a huge list of choices in front of me from a hard drive, some just get forgotten about.

that happened to me 2 weeks ago, lost over 1000 songs and 30+ movies, i'm still sick about it.

think i'm gonna back up everything from now on

Whatever works for you I guess. Was never into the whole possession of actual CDs thing myself, probably because since I started properly listening to music I've been ripping, burning and downloading. Have my PC in my room so I can play whole albums at a time(and I usually listen to full albums at a time rather than single tracks), have good mp3 player that also plays FLAC, so it essentially replicates a discman and does so much more and have a laptop(a cheap, old one) connected to a 300GB external HD hooked up to high quality speakers in my living room(admittidly some lower bitrate mp3s don't sound good when played on big speakers, depends on the song though, some songs are grand encoded too 128kb/s, some need at least 320kb/s or FLAC/lossless to sound good at all, but it's not like it's really a problem downloading a song in a different format.)

Yeah but try downloading cover art like Tool's new album with the stereoscope viewer:
    Link

or Spiritualized's 3D face mould thing:
    Link

or anything made by the Hafler Trio:
    Link

There's actually a discussion on the Music forum about whether sleeves are relevant for anyone interested.

Couldnt really be further from the truth.I have all my CDs ripped to Foorbar/Flac and also the ones i borrow, so i am do listen to them in good quality when im on the PC using good headphoes or speakers, i just dont find a list of music appealing.
My serious listening is done in my room on a seperates system so i guess i enjoy the experience more of physically holding the CD,putting it in the tray cutting the lights and sitting back to enjoy.
A vinyal junkie would probably disagree with both our opinions but like you said whatever works.
