Never heard of TP link myself. And you'll only get the 108mbps speed if you have a compatible wireless card (presumably a TP Link one as well). Maybe do a google for reviews on that model number.

Edit: ok considering I can only find one page in English thru google that even mentions this router I'd avoid it.

Edit 2: Second hand WRT54G on sale here for €50

Marx Computers in Fairview sell it (for €80) so £35 sterling wouldn't be a bad price, if nobody else bids.

I wouldn't be overly concerned about the brand, if I as buying it over the counter, but I'd be a bit reluctant to go with an unknown brand through eBay.

I was a bit more successful with Google than irlrobins.

I've read about this here before. There is a sequence that needs to be followed.

I've read that paragaph 5 or 6 times, and it still doesn't make any sense.

Can you give a slightly more coherent description of what you did?

(And by the way, a laptop is a PC).

    from: http://www.ntlworld.ie/help_centre/home_networking.asp

Connecting devices to the cable modem
If you are connecting more than one device (PC / Apple Mac / Xbox / Router etc) to the cable modem you will need to follow this procedure every time you want to connect the modem to a different device:
    1. Shutdown the PC connected to the modem
    2. Remove the cable connecting the modem to the PC (USB or Ethernet) from the PC
    3. Unplug the power from the modem and wait at least 30 seconds
    4. Plug the power lead only back into the modem - do not connect the lead to the PC yet.
    5. The modem will take a few seconds to 'lock-on' to the network. When the modem is ready you will see the SYNC and RDY lights are fully on.
    6. Now connect the other PC to the modem using the USB or Ethernet cable. (If you are using USB please ensure you have installed the USB drivers prior to connecting the cable).
    7. This PC will then be allocated an IP address and you should be able to connect to the internet.
Please note: the USB and Ethernet ports on the modem cannot both be used at the same time.
If you do require that both computers have access to the internet at the same time then setting up a LAN (local area network) using a router is required.

It's hard to offer useful advice when we're just guessing about what your seeing, as you haven't bothered to include any useful information in your post.

Can the wireless client on the laptop see any networks at all? Or is it that your laptop can see the network, but can't connect to it? If the laptop can't see any networks, have you confirmed that the wireless adapter in the laptop is actually working, by taking it to somewhere that there's a known good wireless network?

Have you set up encryption on the router? Can you connect with the encryption disabled?
