God I hope so. I couldn't stomach the crook, but if I get a day in the pub because he carked it then at least he'll have done some good.

So are we all off work or what?? RTE news say there's a state funeral and members of the public are invited to file past his coffin but sure we can't do that if we're stuck behind a desk can we??

Terrible idea... I still remember The September 11th day... The US didn't have a day of mourning for it... why the hell did we? I still had to go to work as I had deadlines to meet that didn't magically disappear, except I wasn't able to go to the pub afterwards.

Unfortunetly pubs aren't staffed by robots just yet... so they'll be closed as well. You'd have to get a few cans in the night before and watch the funeral on the telly.

so they'll be closed as well.
They will in their shíte. Days of mourning are optional public holidays. Most publicans will have the good sense to stay open (particularly with the current good weather).

    Quoted for hilarity.

You could probably go to your boss and tell them you're very upset and really feel you should go to see Charlie to pay your respects. He might just laugh at you though.

    That'd be ridiculous!
He was a notable statesman for a good long while, but the controversy surrounding him in the last 15ish years overshadows alot of the differences he made.

He was only one man afterall.
Let those who want to mourn, take a sick/holiday day or avoid the pub themselves. But with all the money he scammed, there's no call for other people to be out of pocket through enforced mourning for him!

Hmmm... Perhaps we should have a day of mourning for the Celtic Tiger instead?

I think it should be a day of mourning - who pays for these state funerals? We do!! - so by default we should be allowed to attend(or quietly mourn elsewhere...like a pub)... :D:D

Erm.... Were you of age on the last day of mourning?
Don't mean to be rude or anything...

But a day of mourning means pubs close too.
Publicans are due some mourning as much as you are!

Ah but I reckon some pubs would open for this they'd do a roaring trade since he wasn't well liked and all. If you work a d.o.m you're entitled to get a day in lieu so it's not like the whole country would shut down- thats the way it was for sept 11..

So eh....whats the actual status of this day of mourning??

Right now, it only seems to be speculation. There is nothing on the Taoiseach's press release site about it.
