My boyfriend went to the dentist yesterday for the first time in a few years and he was charged 60 for a check up.. No cleaning, no fillings just a quick look at the teeth.. He was told when ringing up to make the appointment that the surgery don't accept PRSI in payment for checkups.. I was under the mpression that we are entitled to a free check up and a clean every 6 months as long as we are paying PRSI?? Am I wrong in assuming this??

Also he was told he needs "Root Cleaning" done what ever that is and its costing him €80 a side.. Is this correct or is he being ripped off?? His teeth are in fairly good nick other wise, he didnt need any fillings at all... Lucky him  wish I could say the same :o

    Hi,

when i worked for a dentist any new patient covered by they're PRSI got a checkup for free and their first cleaning for free. also your right in saying this is then done for free once every 6 months. i have never heard of a dentist that doest take PRIS in part payment for their treatments. i'd get him to get a second opinion if i where you, he can call the department of social and family affairs in letterkenny, they will check his PRIS payments to date to make sure he is covered for dental work.

about the cleaning, get him to call another dentist, say he got a check up and this was the price he was told, ask the other dentist how much he can do it for and if he takes PRSI in part payment.

    Good Luck

There are many dentists who do not partake in the PRSI scheme and accept private patients only. The fees paid by the PRSI to the dentist for work are paltry and many dentists have pulled out. The same goes for the medical card. As for 80 euro per quadrant for root cleaning this by my estimation is a great deal. Specialists will charge multiples of this ammount for this work. Just as always that you are getting a good service for the money.

Is there a list anywhere of dentists that are part of the prsi scheme?

    eta: found one:

maybe all the prsi posts could be combined and their own sticky at the top of the forum?
