Phonetically how do I pronounce the spanish placename-GIJON. I would usually pronounce GI as ch and J as ch.

Gi and j are both guttural, like ch in loch. I'd pronounce Gi as "he" (but gutturally), and j guturally too, to sound something like "he-hon".
