I'll give another try in a bit, I do know that Mr Internet is out to get me from time to time by thwarting all my efforts to find what I look for. :)

TOTBL is an outstanding debut. I was really excited about this band when I first heard the album a couple of years back but Antics soon f**ked that up. Its terrible. It sounds like the album was hurried. It lacks the depth and soul of the first. Probably the record company wanted it out there to jump on the "revivalist" surge that was happening at the time.

If you like TOTBL I would HIGHLY recommend this:
    Editors : The Back Room

More Joy Division / Echo and the Bunnymen leanings.
So what if there are comparisons...if it sounds good.....

Have to agree on the 'Editors', they are doing some great stuff. I'd recommend any Interpol fan check out this band.

I still love Antics though :p

Funny that i came across antics first but on listening to bright lights i realised that it far bettered(is that a word?) Antics. it's amazing, brilliant on a whole. saying that antics can stand alone as an excellent album. great tunes like evil and c'mere! amazing!

When I was listening to the songs on TOTBL for the first time, most of them started off sounding great, and then just as I thought they were about to finish (and I was thinking "yeah that was good"), they explode into something incredible. For example, PDA sound like it could end at 3:09, but from there till the end of the song is probably the best part of the album IMO.
It happens in "The New" at about the same time.

None of the tracks on Antics do this in the same way.

Amazing album, I must get that Editors one.

I can't believe my eyes with this poll! Antics clearly wipes the floor with TOTBL! There's not a track I'd swap on Antics for ANYTHING on TOTBL (maybe Say Hello To The Angels for Next Exit...). I do like TOTBL but I'd heard Antics first and wasn't half as impressed with their first. Take You On A Cruise is one of the most breathtaking songs I've ever heard.

Btw, Editors should not be mentioned in the same breath as Interpol! The vocalists lyrical range is terrible and he constantly repeats the same few lines in songs. Musically they have one or two moments but in general they sound like bland, emotional post-punk, few defining features, and absolutley nothing new in the post-punk field. They lack the effortless 'beauty' (for want of a better word) thats makes Interpol's stuff sound so genuine. Why have a burger when you can eat steak??;)

Personally I'd rather go for lobster and listen to Joy Division ;)

They're no Joy Division. But they're bloody good in their own right. The Joy Division comparisons are mostly due to his voice, the music is so different.

That's true but I find him very hard to listen to. It's like hearing a guy impersonating Elvis, it's just not the same and it takes away from my enjoyment of Ian Curtis's voice.

Saw them on Randalls Island, NY in 2004 and have been a fan ever since. Great live band.

I particularly like the instrumental parts of Public Pervert and PDA, great music.

Your dead right on comparisons only being due to voice, its the same with the dude from Editors, but other than that they're fairly crap. To be honest I've never really given Joy Division the time they probably deserve, considering folk are always banging on about them. Its probably because Interpol were the first band of that 'type' I started listening to. Before they became my 'new fave band' my influences were all over the place. Still are actually!

Fans should also check out Echo and the Bunnymen, another great band.

The voices are kind of alike, but to be honest I never even thought about the similarity until someone said it. They both have that kind of bleak aged voice.

By the way, guess where I got my username ;) Opening track of closer, the drums in that song are amazing.

That was the first Joy Division song I've ever heard (apart from Love Will Tear Us Apart of course), still blows me away. I love your little Aphex avatar by the way.

Anyway, I'm being a bad off topic mod, back to Interpol!

    why thank you Mr. Mod
*btw he wrote that song about a novel from J.G. Ballard, his favourite writer. I'm reading that now. It's so strange.

NYC on TOTBL is amazing.. It's such a beautiful song

I have that aphex tattoo if you wanna see

there are some mad lyrics on bright lights...

    people should look them up.

I'd also recommend listening to The Sound. They hardly got any recognition in the 80's but "All Fall Down" is a great post punk album
Interpol at Oxygen Green Room= one the best gigs I've ever been to.

I too was at that gig. Had to put up with listening to the truly awful Athlete beforehand to get a front row place but it was well worth it. They had fantastic stage presence and played a great variety from both Lights and Antics

Yous can hate me as much as you want but i prefer Antics. I'm not a massive fan and i started getting into them when antics was released so i prefer it. Although i haven't listened to totbl as much. I love slow hands and evil.

i prefer antics, initially i thought it wasnt very good but it quickly grew on me and imo i think its the more consistent album

TOTBL.... because of songs like "Untitled" and "The New".
It's a hard decision to make really not like the answers in black and white.
Yum... I'll have a Paul Banks please (just had to add that in there) :)

ANTICS:d !!! Slow Hands, Evil, C'mere <3 ....AMAZING album! But TOTBL was ****ing brilliant too! A toughie but for me Antics was the better one!

    i was there myself. unbelievable.
i think the fact that it was indoors and pretty dark as well as having that cool red lighting behind them set the scene.
    everyone just went nuts.
Interpol at Oxygen Green Room= one the best gigs I've ever been to.
