Storing away my collection..

Hi Guys,

It Has eventually dawned on me that I will have to give up this brilliant hobby until I have a car of my own to bring me to the flying field..:(

My 2 planes and a foamy are taking up a lot of space in my room and want to move them out. The only place I can move them to is the attic which I fear may be too damp..Am I probably right.
The 2 glow planes are are kinda badly damaged at the moment. Should I just throw them out and splash out on a new plane when I resume this beautiful hobby in a few years time?
I might try and find an big open area for the foamy to keep that going.

Also, whats the best way to store batteries,engines and 1 LiPo(Ouch) for a at least a year or 2.?I havent run the engines in about 7 months. I was using Morgans fuel. Has this got after run in it or will these be all messed up when I resume in a few years..?

Storing the stuff ....
Store lipo 1/2 charged (not in the house - fire hazard ! ), care with garden shed in case freezing happens during winter. TBH lipos don't really store that well, they go off with time, like a loaf of bread. :mad:
Model planes if attic is dry why not keep them there?
Spray engines & radios with WD40 and keep somewhere dry
Glowfuel - a cool place, not in direct sunlight or heat, well sealed, and not in a metal container.

Why give it up if you enjoy it? Others have had the same difficulties and solved them.
If you want to, you can cure your travel difficulties by flying Speed 400 electric airplanes, they are smaller, and go plenty fast (esp if you go for fighters), a friend of mine who has no car puts 4 speed 400 planes into a sports carry bag while going on the bus to where he flies !
They are wingspan 25 - 40" average.
Take apart wings = 2 x half wing go back in box for travel.
Leave off wheels = better flying characteristics, and can belly land on any grass field, long or short - no need for club type runway of mown grass so no need to travel somewhere special to fly in the first place.
These type of planes probably suit your lifestyle better than the ones you have bot up till now.
Just a couple of the reasons I mainly fly electric and PSS myself .... greater convenience.

You're not alone, just got pushed into following the wrong recipe given your circumstances.

- I never looked back - I've only got 1 glow plane now and it's hardly used, meanwhile the airmiles on my smaller models just goes up and up .... my AeroNaut Skyraider has over 100 flights now, my Sport Wing is at 40 hours (dunno how many flights that is cos some are 60 - 90 minute flights), and a Daisy which is much thumped and battered still goes out regularly to a local field for more despite all the glue inside it. These S400 models are real workhorses, but most of all they are more convenient.

i say dont leave

you should do what colwings said and either dispose ur current ones or hang then from your room or put them in the attic/shed

Leccie is a thaught alright I must look into it..
I have a shockflyer type plane already which is probably too light for everyday flying but I will look at a heavier one...

I would only be giving up the hobby for a few years anyway. I would def take it up again as soon as I get a car..

Why should I spray my radios with WD40? I will be storing it in my room where it is dry. Should I still do it?

No need if stored dry, but you mentioned possible dampness earlier and WD40 is the standard safeguard against damp.

Ok..
What I am going to do is store my planes in the attic (Prob get a new one when I start back anyway). I will leave the engine on but with a nice coating of wd40 and a plastic bag around the front of the plane. All electrics will be removed from planes and kept in my room in a box..
What is the best way to store my nicads?I am thinking about throwing out the flight packs(Properly) and replacing them when I resume flying..As you never know what state they would be in after a year or 2 in the attic..

Keep the lipo 1/2 charged
the nicads empty = 0.9V per cell
the nimh 1/2 full, will self discharge to empty soon enough.

Also, when storing glow engine, place a few drops of 3-1 oil in cylinder head and store at a forward angle of roughly 45 degrees. This helps the oil stay where its needed.
