Just saw several Rembrandts in Louvre recently - Self-portrait, The Flayed Ox, etc - Can anyone give me the nitty-gritty on his style/method and its novelty (or otherwise)?

Rembrandt is not messy. This is messy:

Rembrandt is using the sensual possibilities of the paint. Is that what you mean by "messy"? Rembrandt is not a novelty. Its serious stuff.

I did not use the word "messy".

sloppy and messy have similiar connotations.

my opinion of his work would be that he used good, rich brushwork and from what i know he was an expert in the technique of chiarscuro.

i also like the use of light in some of his pictures eg this one, i think it brings up the skin tones pretty well.
