DDR RAM speeds

    I've seen advertisements for PC2100 PC2400 PC2700 and PC3000. I know these are the speeds in Mb/s, but are the faster ones really worth the money? Are they compatible with all DDR boards or do they need specific abilities on the motherboard? Any other info about the differences that anyone can provide would be appreciated! :D

    iirc they should be compatible with all motherboards.. main difference between them being the internal speeds and the fsb speed that they are rated at.
    PC2700 would have a 333Mhz internal speed and a 166Mhz FSB rating... 2100 is 266/133 etc. etc. only reason to buy a higher rated one would be if you were interested in increasing or overclocking your motherboards FSB. and just to add higher ratings doesnt mean better quality :)

    pc2700 looks like it will be approved as an industry standard, pc3000 is still very much an unofficial, untested standard. Most of the major ram manufacturers have difficulty releasing a module that will work at pc2700 (166/333) at the fastest memory timings. pc3000 modules are just pc2700 modules which have been tested to this speed. If you are getting a normal 133/266mhz board, and don't plan on going mad on overclocking, pc2100 is fine. Most pc2100 will overclock to 150 - 160 anyway. The limiting factor is usually your motherboard.

    Admitedly its a soltek board and may not be the same with all boards but they do talk about PC2700 and performance worth a read :D.
