Worth noting, the following are the unit breakdowns of popular drinks:

    1 pint lager = 2 units
1 100ml glass of wine = 1 unit (so the sort of glass you lot drink is probably 2 - 2.5)
    1 bottle beer = 1.5 units
    1 35ml shot spirits = 1.5 units

1 unit of alcohol is 10ml by volume, or 8g by weight, of pure alcohol.

The percentage alcohol by volume (%ABV) of any drink equals the number of units in one litre of that drink.

That means the chocolate stout I am currently drinking, at 6.5%ABV, has 6.5 units in one litre. I am currently drinking 330mls of it, so this single bottle is just over two units of alcohol.

...oh, and it'd the DOTW and tastes GOOD.

I always wondered how they broken down the unit thingy. Thats freaky, when you think about it, an average person will go out twice at weekends, and 9 times outta ten end up in the nite club, and consume spirits, not only that but they are probably having the odd glass of wine, etc with a meal during the week too.... Thats a heck of alot of units of alcohol to consume in one week.

Just something to think about I guess!!

This week I've had 19 and that's distinctly below my old average - although since the summer is now over I'll probably be 10-20 a week for the next year.

Going on the last 4 months - I'd say my average would have been 40-50 units a week, although really could have been anything from 20 to 80. Never again though - wrecks your short term memory, and presumably other bits of your body too!

    1 bottle beer = 1.5 units
Methinks that the 1.5 litre bottles of Grolsch falls outside of this category.
As do the 500ml bottles of Abbey Ale (8.5%) I brewed the other day
    Damn.

I have wine with my dinner every night - at least two glasses and probably drink 3 bottles over the weekend with a few pints so that's me in the top bracket.

    Aw well... keeps me sane.

    oops
    I'm too hasty
I clicked the poll on 1-10 before reading majd's post, I'm probably the next one up,
    11-20
that's cos I'm a wine drinker at home and a wodka drinker in the pub

Multiply your mls by the %

    pint of beer is 568ml x 4.3%= 2.44 units.

I think you need another option. I know plenty of people who would be well over 40, some over 100

    568ml x 4.3%? That comes out as 24.424...

mls x ABV divided by 10?

    No. rubadub is right.

    568ml = .568L x 4.3 = 2.4units

I was only pointing out how to do it cause somebody was talking of larger bottles of beer and higher %s of certain drinks. I think the placing of the decimal should be fairly obvious.
I always used to use this method to calc how much equivalent drinks are, esp, when I used to do homebrew, people would ask how much should I drink?

eg a bottle of vodka is 700ml X40%, so just say 28
    a can of beer is 500ml X 5%, so say 25,
so there is just over 11 cans in a bottle of vodka (the decimal is obvious)

it shows up why shots are such a rip off in a pub. 10 shots of 37.5% vodka=10x35.5x37.5=13312.5 so 10 shots is only 5.45 pints of 4.3% beer.

Ah, the decimal is never obvious... don't go work in banking :)

yikes, i just totted up roughly what i drank last week, and came out with about 28.5 units... last week would be what i considered a 'normal' week, drinking-wise. im a college student - went out tues, thurs and sat. wasn't really drinking on thurs (still managed 4-5 vodka + mixers, not bad over a whole night out from 9pm-2am) and was only out for a small bit on saturday (2 pints) but it seems my consumption on tuesday certainly made up for it
...wow...im kinda speechless; never knew i drank so much!

and i didn't even do any shots this week, they were all normal drinks.....

definitely don't want to add up the week before, that was a mega-p*ss-up week - that'd be *really* scary.............................

isn't it supposed to be 14 units or something per week for adult females??? or what is it????? eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeekkkkk!! sheisser!!!!

Usually put eight pints away on one weekend night for the whole week.

    :(

It's 14 units in a week for women, 21 units in a week for men.

Your liver can process one unit of alcohol in one hour.

If you find you're having a major problem staying inside that limit, try alternating your alcoholic drinks with non-alcoholic drinks when you're out, e.g. glass of wine, lime n soda, glass of wine... or pint lager, pint diet coke, pint lager...

I get the odd pint of water while ordering a pint of guinness. I lash the water down while waiting for it to settle. Hydrates you and fills you up so you cannot drink the guinness too fast, pints of coke are pricey and destroy the stomach.
