USB Flash drive not showing in explorer

Hi

When I plug in the flash drive into a particular win. XP machine, it doesn't show up as a drive in explorer.

It recognises it in the system tray & I can click on it & see the properties, but it won't show it on explorer?

Now there are mapped drives in explorer 'f' 'g' & the A, C, D, & E drives are used up. Could the mapped drive be causing a problem? I don't want ot remove them as some programs use the shortcuts.

The flash drive does work on other PC's.

I used to have the same problem. The solution I found is to right click your first mapped drive and select disconnect. The USB Drive will then show up using the drive letter of the disconnected mapped drive. You will have to re-login to your network to restore the mapped connection.
AFAIK the reason this hapens is that the USB drive when it's plugged in wants to assign itself as the next physical drive. Hence if you have physical drives A, C, D, and E, the USB recognises these and names itself F. The problem with that of course is you already have a mapped drive with that letter, so the USB drive gets lost behind it. I haven't found any other solution other than temporarily disconnecting the first mapped drive (as shown above).

Eggsellent stuff mordeith, you were bob on. I removed mapped drive 'f' & it spotted the drive.
