Windows XP as Gaeilge

Irish speakers will now be able to work more easily in their chosen language following the launch today of an Irish edition of the Microsoft Windows XP operating system.

The US software giant Microsoft developed the Language Interface Packs (LIPs) in conjunction with Foras na Gaeilge, the body responsible for the promotion of the Irish language throughout Ireland and the universities of Ulster, Limerick and Maynooth.

The LIP software allows the user to install an Irish language ‘skin’ on top of an existing installation of Windows XP and Microsoft Office, converting the older version to Irish.

This means that programs such as including Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint will now be available with Irish language commands.

The Minister for the Gaeltacht, Rural and Community Affairs, Mr Éamon Ó Cuív, launched the Irish language versions of Microsoft Windows and Office in Dublin today. Both packs are free to download.

Minister Ó Cuív was joined at the launch by Mr. Joe Macri, Managing Director, Microsoft Ireland and Mr. Seosamh MacDonncha, Chief Executive, Foras na Gaeilge.

Microsoft said the project was in response to huge interest in the idea of providing Windows XP in Irish and also marked the software company’s 20 years of investment in Ireland.

Because It will get a lot more attention here.
Thats very cool. I´d use that simply so I could learn more Irish.

Hopefully it will also help with the revival of Irish, and get us onto that EU list of official languages, if we are still being considered.

    Wow, that's nice and pointless.

You won't learn Irish from knowing what Irish for File and Help and Settings are, will you?

How about "Warning: not enough virtual memory!" ?

Yes! That is brilliant. Delighted Gaelige has been accepted.

Jimi Spandex: Yes you will learn Irish from using XP as Gaelige. Have you ever used a foreign computer before? Im in Spain and using an Italian laptop and a German laptop.
I know Trennen is german for Disconnect, Verbindung is Connect. I dont know those words in Irish. There is a good few words I know now in both these langauges. Its called Imersion..

I think this is great. I can hold conversations in irish no problem but I would not know any tech words and I'm sure I would learn a huge amount from using xp in irish.

Anyone know what "this program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down" is in irish???!!!! I just hope that serious errors are in english - i'm only a beginner really.

Anyone worked out how to switch back to English?!

It will only install if you have sp2 installed.
I thought I read somewhere that installing sp2 was a bad idea?

If anyone wants to change back to English how you do it is run the install file again and select 'Bain' and it uninstalls the Irish language settings and reverts to English.

I think its worth dowloading and trying. After all if no one downloads it, its going to be impossible to get any big software company to anything like that again.
As Mear says he is working on a mix of languages on various machines in Spain.
I'm doing the same here in France and did it in Spain also, it a little difficult not impossible.
Languages are not barriers they are merely local conventions.

But the keyboards, man, the keyboards! AZERTY my QRSE :D
How's life in Cavalaire? I'm thinking of moving down that direction in about 6 months.

Bring spare keyboards. Buy a good one and a few cheap ones.
I know a guy who tried to be clever and ordered from Jes...
Yup. a German keyboard arrived. :D

The living is good. The weather is glorious.
Schorchio or "canicule" as they say down here.
    I recommend it to anyone.
If you, or anyone else, is coming down this neck of the woods let me know and we'll organise a splinter group of the "Board's Beers".

I had a nocturnal, half-asleep vision the other night about a keyboard with transparent keys and little pads covered with tiny LEDs underneath forming the letters. Changing a setting would make the LEDs change to spell out different letters corresponding to the requested keyboard layout.

Does it sound like a goer?

I'd definitely be on for a Boards Wines evening :D

Sorry to dredge up this ancient thread, but I only just discovered this XP as Gaeilge recently and wanted to run this by everyone - is there no better way than completely uninstalling it to change languages? I mean its great that XP is in Irish and all, but it isn't very useful for a computer that multiple people access if not all of them want the Irish version? It would be good if it was possible to temporarily revert it back to English if someone was gonna use the computer who preferred English?

    Ah well its still cool.
