If i give someone my bank account and sort code to put money in...is that safe?

I am just wondering if that is safe? I am selling some items on the site and just want to know.

yep, there is no problem with giving that info to people. There is nothing they can do with it.

Sorry to butt in but there is no way on this planet that i would give my bank details to anybody, ever. Not only can they put money in but some fraudsters(?) make a living out of this. I think some people might agree with me.

Just curious, not questioning your knowledge but how do some people make a living out of this?

what about the nigerian email scam? doesn't use your details in some nefarious manner?

No, they need much more information to con a bank such as your pin code or your signature.

The big scams involve filling out pages of data such as address and mothers maiden name etc.....

Remember if you phone a bank, they ask you a few verification questions such as date of birth and other bits and bobs.

So long as they have nothing but your account and sort code, its tricky to much with it.

Your details could be used for direct debit on someone elses bills.

signature is needed. just give:

name
bank a/c
sort code

they need a signature for the rest.....

Neither Eircom or Esat Bt ask for a signature to set up direct debit.

It SHOULD be safe but some people who work in banks have been known to do some really stupid things so there is always the possibility of a scam working.

If you want to be extra careful then open a second basic account with no overdraft facility, most banks will do this with minimum fuss. Use this for any incoming payments and immediately withdraw the money, that way even a successful scam would just be bounced because the account is empty.

Everybody that you've ever paid by cheque has your account number & sort code. It is pretty useless on its own.

If someone sets up something i.e. a direct debit out of your account etc using those details, then they would need a signature etc which they obviously wouldnt have or would not be the same. If eircom set it up without these then they are stupid and liable if it turns out to be fraudulant. So from what i can see there is no problem with this and as kasintahan said its alot safer than handing your credit card to a cashier. But obviously ask the bank too.

If you have any enemies or aquaintances with a lot of dodgy cash, don't let them get a hold of it.

Tis quite possible to walk into a bank, deposit €1,000,000 of dodgy money into someone else's account and walk away.

I'd say most people are far too intent on working out a way of keeping the cash and not getting caught as opposed to just wiping their hands.

I wouldn't risk putting any bank details up on a public forum.

In fact, on boards, I've even seen somebody's bank details posted who has the same name as me. What's to stop me going into the bank, filling out the withdrawl forms and presenting my passport as ID? I don't think the banks would go to the bother of writing down my passport no. or checking to see if my DOB was the same as the owner of the account I was attempting to withdraw money from.

Maybe I'm wrong.

CCTV, fair enough, I'd be gone quickly though. Maybe I'd get to see myself on crimeline

Can't imagine banks having a copy of the real bank account owner's signature to verify against my fraudulent one though. My guess is that would show up in the later investigation into the missing funds.

No its not. If your credit card details are stolen, then you tend to get your money back.

Someone forge your signature or have other information to get the money can do it.

How many times when you withdraw money has the bank actually checked the signature.

I know in BOI you need ID for large amounts and they will only accept Passport or Drivers license.(Funnily enough the next day when I had them I didn't get asked)

Better to be safe then sorry, if its more then once off set up a special account in Permanent TSB - no charges(allegedly) and don't leave much cash in it.
