    noob linux install

      afternoon all,

      looking for a bit of advice here. ive decided to install a linux based os on my pc. it will be on a seperate HDD for now(ive have 6 in my pc so ive one or two spare)

      now i have used linux before(redhat) and i used to do a small bit of linux based progrmaing too, not much mind. ive never tried to install it either. i want ot use it for the basics at first, internet, word processing ect and multimedia(dvds mp3's(just playing, no fancy remote controlled home theather pcs) ect.

      now for the uber noob questions, hope ye dont mind answering them.Which one should i go for, redhat, fedora, mandrake ect? whats the best way to go about installing it? anything elso i should know or do before i go ahead and do this?

      I dont know much about linux but mandrake is extremely easy to install.

      Have a look at Kubuntu. I've just installed it on my machine here and it was the easiest linux install I've ever done. Entire system up and running in no time. The whole thing seems very user friendly.

      Install Ubunut/Kubuntu(KDE variant) - http://www.ubuntulinux.org/

      After that, check out http://ubuntuguide.org/

      A nice way to ease you into linux/command line

      fedora == red hat.
      In my opinion there isn't really large differences between the likes of red hat and mandarke. Especially when you compare them to the likes of gentoo or slackware.

      And you will probably get more help over on the Unix forum.

      Suse 9.2 is nice and easy to start of with - easy install - YAST easy to use.

      ok

      just to keep you all informed of my progress, i have ubuntu downloaded and whern i have a day to spare i will attempt an install.

      in the meantime im looking at the guide, trying to get to grips with it all(which will prob make more sence when i have it installed!

      Ubuntu is very straight forward, the guide is suggested tips to get you on your feet.
