Downloading Torrents effect on network connection

Downloaded Azureus tonite and got it working (port forwarding etc.).. Anyway its running (50/60 KB/Sec, is this good?) but when I have it running it has a disastrous effect on the rest of my connection. Example - With azureus open, I tried to download coldfusion from macromedia, 11KB/sec, closed Azureus and the coldfusion…

I am using Azureus with the UPnP plugin instead of portforwarding my router and have capped my upload to 7kB/s and I get about 60kB/s on average. I am on the iol 1mb line also.
Can anyone tell me the best settings to get the most out of my downloads
