Tryin to get a big list of the best jazz artists of both styles cos I'm a classic jazz man myself and I hate hearin bands recommended on here that are fusion and I go out and trek lookin for their albums and stuff. Also it can be a definitive end to the "What good jazz bands are there", "Gimme some jazz to listen to" type forums.

    Billy Holiday: Voice
    Ella Fitzgerald: Voice
Sonny Stitt: Sax (Autumn in New York)
John Coltrane : Sax ( Giant Steps/A Love Supreme)

    Charlie Parker: Sax (Boss Bird)
Dizzie Gillespie: Trumpet (Diz 'N Bird at Carnegie Hall)
    Thelonious Monk: Piano (Monks Dream)

    John Scofield: Guitar
    Dennis Chambers: Drums
    Jaco Pastorius: Bass
    Victor Wooten: Bass
Greg Howe: Guitar (just check out his "Extraction" album with Wooten and Chambers).
    Bill Bruford: Drums and Composer

These are mostly fusion artists, but they all rule IMO.
