Tesco in ballybrack had a goodmans divx/dvd player with an alba surround system strapped to it for €90. May not be the best quality but for that price you could stick it in the spare room.
What I thought was strange was the goodmans player blatantly was telling you that you can download films from the net and watch them on it.
There were no details on the box and none out on display so I don't know what connections either had. Didnt say if it was region free either.

I got one of these in Tesco Artane a few weeks ago.

Its money well spent. The DVD player is excellent and plays back Divx and Xvid without fail so far. It seems to play every type of media I can throw at it as well, even some really cheap stuff.

The speakers do feel a little cheap but the sound good.

It doesn't come multiregion however there is a simple remote hack, just google for it.

You are right about them explaining you can download movies, they are just short of having a bittorrent client thrown in.

What sort of connections has the player? 1 or 2 scarts? composite? optical out?
Has the surround sound, scart, composite and optical?

The player is very good. Full 5.1 outputs on the back. Composite video and s-video optical out and of course scart. can be made region free as follows

How to convert your Goodmans GDVD161DX player into a multi-region compatible machine
To convert this player to multi-region
    1. Power off your DVD player
    2. Power on your DVD player
    3. Press the Open button on your remote control to open the drive tray
    4. Press the 1 button on your remote control
    5. Press the 0 button on your remote control
    6. Press the 3 button on your remote control
    7. Press the 0 button on your remote control
    8. Press the 0 button on your remote control for multi-region playback
    9. The onscreen display will indicate the currently selected region
    10. Power off your DVD player
    11. Power on your DVD player
NB: You may need to reset the parental controls after performing this procedure

The surround system is ok. Has no optical in. The speakers connect by bare wire which I like since you can connect several into the one socket and you dont need the "correct plug" as it is wire.

Does it do MP3 DVD? or failing that MP3 CD's?

Says it does mp3, not sure about dvd-mp3. I'll read the manual later.

(stangely the menu screen has an option greyed out and I cannot pick component)

it is down to €75 for the 2 units now

I picked one of these up in finglas a couple of weeks ago for E75.
The only problem i have is that if there is powere going to the dvd player(even if its on standby) My TV(a Sanyo 28" w/s) wont't turn on. It's like its trying to but keeps going to standby.

Apart from that its great, plays nearly all avi's, doesn't play window media.
And the sound is grand, decent bass.

There was one left in finglas last week.

    Daire
