Not sure but i dont think it would be that hard to get members if ya PIMP it enough about the college..I wonder is there anything like this in the other colleges around Dublin.

Hey maybe we'll be like trend setters or somethin, put DCU on th map!!!Id join it if it already existed.Ya need a group to go out for a good night on the town and its the best way to meet new peopleinside and outside your course.

Well I want my college years to be great and this seems like the perfect way to salvage it and from the general concensus of people in DCU about lack of comradeship/atmosphere/nites out etc., this idea seems a perfect way to solve em.Id give this soc my support and help out whatever way I can.So what do yas all think?

i agree.i think a lot of people WANT there to be more going on, they're just spectacularly lazy about. so a society saying there's an event on this friday in X location could work a treat.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,180 ✭✭✭Flex

I presume that means yad be up for it?

who? moi? if so, then yeah. if i was going to be in dcu for more than one semester next year. which will probably be ridiculously busy anyway.

From reading through this thread you will find that the people who started here about 6 years ago or more seem to have enjoyed college and are more fond of DCU than say the people who started 4 years ago or less.

I started here 6 years ago and this place used to be great for social life!!!

I remember in my first year here having to queue outside the old bar early in the morning to get in. The place would be packed all day long and all night long. The ents always had loads of stuff on to keep everyone busy.
Some of the best nights I have had were in the first 2 years of rag week here. Having taken a break from college after this and recently returned the place has changed SO much.

None of the buzz that existed around DCU back then and in particular I noticed it around rag week is the same.

Not sure what this is down too but I did have a few ideas on it.

Students don’t seem to have as much money due to the fact Drink, food..... Rent etc has all gone up.

Students seem to study and attend lectures alot more now. Two reasons for this is cause student are finding it harder and harder to get work after college so they need to have very good results ..... an example of this is CA.

I know this one won't be liked but it is a fact.
Alot of courses in DCU have come way down in points so they are easier to get into. But the courses have not got easier so it means the people getting in have to work alot harder to keep up with their studies and pass exams.
Rag week used to be a lecture free week for majority of people 6 years ago now students are very reluctant to do this because the can't afford to miss the time.

Are student just becoming more academic and hard working?? ;)

I think you will find the real reason is because I'm not there.

I don't mean to be a dampner on things here, but your idea for a society that just has events is a bit frivolous. You're complaining that people don't go to events. Why would they go to yours?

Aside from that, why don't yis all meet up for a pint in the bar sometime? Then you can be out and bitch about people not going out! :D
You can be the boards.ie DCU contingent.

Also, currently it's techweek in DCU . Next week it's both music week and photography week. I'm sure there's lots of other stuff on too.

Well, the fact that other Socs are geared towards other things apart from socializing would give this one an advantage over them. Also there's a boards meetup in Doyles tonight at about 8:30. See the thread on it http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=227398

How is it "frivolous"?The idea (as far as Iv gathered) is basically for a soc which would organise at least 2or3 nites out at a nite club in the city centre each month and get a group goin.Sounds like a good idea and as for tech week and those others;I wasnt even aware they were on (& never even heard of them). Is there anything on this week(or has anything even been on this semester)because Im not aware of that either.I think alot of the students would like this idea.If a soc like this which organised nites out and stuff already existed I would have joined it.Some of the main problems mentioned so far are lack of comradeship/atmosphere/good nites out.Id prefer not to go through college with only a handful of DCU nites out per year and only knowing the same people I knew prior to starting college.Just seems like a major waste or something, and alot of people have similar opinions.

Damn!only heard of that boards beer thing there aswel!

You said there was a class party on earlier in the week but you didn't go to it because none of your friends were going. But you would be will to go on your own if it was a socialising society event? What's the difference? There would have been a lot of people at that party in the same boat as you, just a couple of months in college and still not knowing many people.

Not so.Everyone in the class hangs in groups(99% of them are old secondary school mates)of 4-7.Even on nights out this group thing is still evident. Thus, if I were to have gone out alone it would have been absolutely ****e coz I basically would have been like a leper or something; alone without my group, surrounded by everyone in theirs.Difference with a soc would be that (Im presuming) most people in it would be interested in mixing with others, meeting new people and havin good craic, rather than clinging to there little groups.

    This is a depressing thread.
I'm so old I went to DCU when it was still NIHE and I had an absolute blast. It's a shame that so many of you say it's gone to hell now.
    Yup we worked hard.
Yup we had mad hours of lectures and labs.
    Yup we had mighty craic.

Anyone think the new Plush club night in the helix might help remedy this?

What time were they expecting? It's a nightclub after all. And it supposably stays open till four.

I was more ticked off that it's apparently only open wednesdays (Maybe someone could confirm or deny this).

To give my two cents on the issue as a whole; there is often a cold atmosphere around the campus, or in the bar, and the events may not be fantastic.
But in contrast to a lot of people, my class is not broken up into cliques, we all get along fine. And to be honest I'm happy to hang with my classmates in college and hang out with my other friends closer to home at weekends/evenings.

They're whinging about having to stay on campus until 11pm because they don't on campus or nearby.

It might improve wednesday evening atmosphere in the bar, but I don't think it will contribute to the overall atmosphere of dcu.

Maybe if we jus stay positive. They're will be lots of stuff going on on res too, so if you know anyone, ask them what the story is.

I hate that people are already being negative about something that hasn't even gotten off the ground.

hey guys i think its time for a newer and more upbeat thread

    So start one?

oooh i knew that remark would come back on me, and i know im a noob to this dcu forum and stuff but still i think people know im more an ideas man than one for taking action when it comes to posting. Also i have no ideas as to a more lighthearted thread. So in essence the argument i'm making is that my remark was totally pointless and i think i'll go take time out in the corner.

Why is the solution to everything "longer bar hours/more extensions etc"? That doesn't interest me in the slightest and as such seems like no solution to me. I'm not even sure what the problem is. What's the other colleges "have" that we're "missing"? Seriously.

This year is a bad year, we've all noticed that. The apathy is almost overwhelming. But that's something new. I haven't seen it this bad since I first came here. Too many people who don't want to be here? Too many who are convinced that "DCU is dull". If it's so dull then get off of your ass and do something about it. Start going to events. Make them good.

At least the Celtic Ball hasn't been cancelled this year. That I'll be at and that I'll enjoy. Events are made by the people. Going around thinking "this is crap, this is crap, this is crap" makes for a pretty sucky event. *shrugs*

Oh and Denny DCU is clearly trying to compete with Barcode. Thus Plush. Maybe if people started going to DCU events then better ones would come along. I know it's a vicious circle but such is life.
