Running an Internet Radio Station

I'm planning on starting up an internet radio station, but there's one thing I need to sort out first - copyright issues. Would I have to pay rights and all that junk?

Who would I go to in this country about something like this? I thought maybe the IMRO, but their website seems totally useless in relation to what they actually do. Are there any laws regarding broadcasting copyrighted material on internet radio stations in this country yet? I know there are in the US, but can't find any info about Irish law.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. And apologies if I'm asking in the wrong forum.

They were thinking of setting up something like this in college a while back, and they learned that they woul eneed to get a license to broadcast music from IRMA, I think it was. You will also need to find out where your servers are based, as you'll likely need a license there too. If they are in the States, you'll need to comply with the The Digital Millennium Copyright Act of 1998 (pdf doc).

I think you mean the IMRO - they have an application for internet music use here: http://www.imro.ie/music_users/music-use-online.shtml

Bloody expensive though! Is there any other way?

The server would be in UL, so that wouldn't be an issue.

As far as I know IMRO need you to have an Irish Radio Licence Issued to you by the BCI (Broadcasting Commission of Ireland)

I wouldn't imagine this applies to an internet only radio station..

I doubt that internet radio is covered by the Broadcasting Commision of Ireland, because technically its not broadcasting. The user connects to a port on the server which on connecion starts streaming data.
Zilog, are you still gonna set up in UL? A guy I know did it last year for a laugh in Plassey. It was pretty good. He was using that winamp thingy, streamcast or something? Well it worked the finest!

I know that Phantom FM when they went off the air the first time to get a licence kept "broadcasting" on the internet so unless they changed the rules since then you don't need a licence

The imro license for an internet based station is 750 euro + vat for one year.
Something like 500,000 streams which means, every song played to 1 listener = 1 stream.
I worked it out that if you have 1 listener tuned in 24/7 for 1 year, and you had 10 songs play every hour..
That uses up over 80,000 streams for 1 listener, so imagine how expensive your stream will be the following year.
I can see why there are so many pirate stations out there, at the same time, if you want to be more established as
an internet station in your own city, then what can you do, and hope to god you have a lot of advertisers, sponsors.
I like what that guy at di .fm did but would redesign the whole site, but they deliver the best of club tunes..

Yeah, and we don't drag up old threads.
