Hi.. I am living in Germany and I believe I am just within the footprint to receive Sky.. .however, I have a couple of questions
Has anyone ever set up Sky in mainland europe. - I think I just need to get a card from Ireland and put it in a digibox in europe and get a satellite dish?
Does sky broadcast the RTE channels and TG4?
Do sky work in Ireland or is it just chorus and ntl?

If it was that easy we would all be doing it. :D

It can be done as long as you have access to a ROI address and telephone number. RTE, TV3 and TG4 are broadcast on the Astra 2d satellite so you need to check this footprint for dish size in your location.

No problem with receiving Sky digital in Germany with the exception of the 2D satellite. I have an ROI suscription and receive sky channels with the exception of 2D channels crystal clear on a 90cm dish. Also I use an irish mobile for ordering movies etc. from Sky,work perfectly.

I'm in Stuttgart and have no problem with Sky stations including those on Astra 2D (RTEs, BBCs etc.). I also have a 90 cm dish.

    Cheers,

    Stephen

    For Tony

Where would one purchase a 2.4 Dish and LNB for the purpose of getting Astra 2D in the Murcia Region of Spain , My Bro has bought a villa out there and the Local Illegal MMDS for British Expats does carry BBC & SKY but not RTE or TV3 or TG4 ,
Box and Card wont be a problem,

    Cheers

Is it fair that RTE broadcast their satellite service on an encrypted, British company's system?

Since you won't find anyone who thinks it's fair it kinda rhetorical.
The reason is that there are about 200m people in the EU who have English as a first or second language so the Yanks would want royalties based on that level for thier stuff rather than the 5m living on the Island. RAI get around this by only encrypting stuff they don't have broadcast rights to - in their case F1, film premiers and other sports etc.

If RTE were to do this then for FTA viewers a lot of stuff would vanish. TV3 would virtually disappear apart from ad breaks news and weather but TG4 should still be able to show anything dubbed so it would be least affected.

Worth reading through the threads posted here - lots of expats interested in Sky reception.

I must say I am impressed that you are all interested in TG4 as well as the other stations. Good on ye. Does it get this sort of rating in Ireland? Personally I would be interested in getting RTE but am not prepared to pay for Sky and so make do with Boards.ie and the RTE news bulletins on the net.

Try www.tecatel.com who are based in Valencia or www.ciberland.com who are in Gandia or Alicante I think.

If RTE were to do this then for FTA viewers a lot of stuff would vanish.

We'd get the news and other domestically produced shows and stuff like West Wing and the Simpsons would be scrambled. Fine by me. At the moment we have nothing, so it would be an improvement.

I'm living in Frankfurt and have Sky running with all the stations. You need to bring the box and card over with you as they are linked to each other. I had to get a slightly bigger dish to get all the channels but it works perfectly.

If bringing over a box is a problem then you can try out these people, don't know anything about them though

It's aimed at english people so would only be the english sky card that you would get. They set you up with a ficticious english address. Maybe they would be able to do it for you with an Irish address, worth asking!
